Friluftshuset in Meavågen has a barbecue area and seating for around 100 people. Outside, there is a stone quay, a dance floor and additional seating. The house is open for everyone to use, as long as it is not rented out. This is an important condition when planning: whether the place is an option for your visit depends on whether it is currently rented out.

Several trails and paths run through Kollevåg friluftsområde; one of them leads to Mjøneset. Kollevåg is also a starting point for paddling trips along the west side of Askøy. If you enjoy combining your stay with outdoor activities, you will find two different options here: exploring trails on foot or experiencing Askøy from the water. You can decide which suits your plans best, whether you have a short outing in mind or are considering further activities.

Askøy på langs offers a broad insight into the island’s landscape. The route is about 37 kilometres long and leads from Kleppestø over the highest points and through the densest forests to its destination in scenic Herdla. It links different landscape experiences across Askøy; its length makes it a planning decision in its own right.

Siglingabu is located in a developed recreational area in the eastern part of Askøy. From the car park by Siglingavatnet, a 1.2-kilometre gravel path leads to the cabin; the route has step-free access and is universally accessible. Activities available at Siglingabu include boating, canoeing, fishing and swimming. The Siglingavatnet outdoor recreation park is a separate place: it has a lit cross-country ski trail, and canoes are available for hire.

Herdla offers both nature watching and a range of leisure activities. More than 240 bird species have been recorded there over time. From the birdwatching tower at Valen, you can watch waders, ducks and gulls; you may also spot an eagle. If you are looking for a different activity, Herdla also has disc golf. Herdla Golf is an easygoing nine-hole coastal course with sea views from every hole. Leisure equipment can be borrowed free of charge from BUA; Herdla Fort has parking, toilets and visitor information. These facilities may change, so it is a good idea to check shortly before your visit.

Culture and consideration for others on Askøy

Askøy’s cultural history offers several ways to explore the island. Mindehuset in Ask is a protected building dating from the mid-18th century. It has open days and guided tours for schools and kindergartens; private tours can be arranged. In Strusshamn, buildings of industrial-historical significance have been converted into cultural venues. Together, they form a cultural area for the Askøy community and the wider Bergen region. The Askøy Museum Association maintains permanent and temporary collections at Sjoddien in Strusshamn.

When planning nature outings, bear in mind a seasonal restriction: in parts of Herdla Nature Reserve and in the seabird reserves, access is prohibited from 15 April to 30 September. Check the current signs and rules on site. This will help you plan your outing in a way that respects the protected areas.
