At the end of Davangsvågen on the western side of Askøy lies Davanger. Agricultural land, a former cannery and the history of fishing give the place several facets. Despite some development and overgrowth, the landscape still feels cohesive. If you are looking for a holiday rental, it is worth distinguishing Davanger’s own character from destinations elsewhere on Askøy.

Landscape and orientation in Davanger

The agricultural land in Davanger is rated as being of high and medium value. At the same time, despite some development and overgrowth, the agricultural area still feels cohesive and intact. For travellers who value an agricultural landscape when choosing a holiday destination, this is a concrete point to consider. Large parts of Davanger’s outdoor areas are mapped by Askøy Municipality as an important recreational area.

A path leads from the school in Davanger through the forest to Skotnes; the walk takes about 40 minutes. The camp is closed and does not accept bookings.

Fishing and the cannery

A cannery was built in Davanger, formerly the last of its kind in Norway. It closed in 2008, and production was moved to Poland.

Fishing is also part of Davanger’s past: the place was once considered a good spot for net fishing, and large quantities of fish were landed there. The factory and the fishing industry represent different aspects of the work formerly carried out in the area.

One cultural highlight on Askøy is Mindehuset in Ask, a protected building dating from the mid-18th century.
