The Gamle Kongevei and Koppangsøyene route is an easy bike ride of about 14.3 kilometres. It follows a cultural trail through a cultural landscape and starts in the centre of Koppang. If you prefer to walk, you can also do the route as a shorter hike. This makes it a practical starting point for travellers who want to combine being active with views of the cultural landscape during their time in Stor-Elvdal.
Koppangsøyene was recognised as a selected cultural landscape of agriculture in 2022. The agricultural area extends for 12 kilometres along the Glomma in Østerdalen. The route and the area therefore offer two different ways to explore: a trip by bike or on foot, and learning about an agricultural cultural landscape.
Church, museums and cultural heritage
Sollia Church is a small wooden log church dating from 1738. It is known for its beautiful paintings on all its walls and ceilings. This gives the building a distinctive artistic feature: the paintings are not limited to a single area of the interior. Visitors interested in church art and historic architectural styles will find a specific cultural highlight here.
The Atnbrufossen Water-Use Museum was founded in 1994. Together with the timber flume installation, the museum is a central attraction during Fossedagene, held every year on the first weekend of September. On this occasion, the operation of the needle gates is demonstrated. The set date is especially useful for travellers who want to plan their stay around the event; the demonstration offers an insight into how the installation works.
Norsk Kultursenter presents cultural heritage through art, literature, music, architectural history, food and drink. These different subjects offer varied perspectives on culture, from artistic and literary expression to architectural history and cuisine. The Sollia War History Museum, housed in the listed Amperhaugen building, has a collection assembled by Jo Øvergaard. It includes objects, uniforms and personal effects from, among others, Milorg, the Kompani-Linge group Grebe, the German occupying forces and the National Unity Party.
Plan your landscape experiences and tours
The Norwegian Scenic Route Rondane runs between Folldal and Venabygdsfjellet, as well as between Sollia Church and Enden. It is open to traffic year-round. This is one way to experience Stor-Elvdal and its surroundings on a road trip. For travellers who prefer hiking, there are different trail experiences: the trail along the Glomma to the foot of Hammarkollen has been repaired, extended and surfaced with gravel.
At Kvitskjæret near Atna, a good but steep viewpoint lies slightly below the summit. The route is 7 kilometres in total, and the summit is at an elevation of 841 metres. These details can help you consider this tour alongside a shorter hike or a bike ride. For a trip focused on hunting, Stor-Elvdal’s municipal forests offer varied hunting grounds. Hunting is possible there for all types of small game, as well as elk and reindeer. Hunting licences for hare, forest birds and grouse are sold for the municipal forest areas.
Getting here and places to help you find your way
Koppang Station is on the Rørosbanen railway line. Trains run from there towards Hamar, Oslo S, Trondheim and Røros. Stor-Elvdal is also located along the Riksveg 3 Østerdalen corridor.
