Åkrestrømmen at Storsjøen: Water, trails and culture
Accommodation in Åkrestrømmen
Åkrestrømmen lies at the northern end of Storsjøen, where the Mistra flows into the lake system. Water, marked trails and a nearby ski area give the place a variety of holiday attractions. Kveldsrunden links the beach, forest, Mistra and town centre; nearby, Sana has a sandy beach with shallow water. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether your days are more likely to be shaped by walks, water activities or winter skiing.
A route between the shore, forest and town centre
The marked Kveldsrunden is 3.2 km long. It starts at Sana, follows the beach, passes through a section of forest and continues along the Mistra to the centre of Åkrestrømmen before returning to the starting point. The beach, forest, riverbank and town centre are therefore all along the same described route. The stated distance is a concrete reference point when planning the outing as part of your day.
If you walk quietly and are lucky, you may see deer, moose, mink and ospreys; such sightings depend on the season and cannot be planned. Trail conditions can also change with the seasons, so it is a good idea to check them before setting off.
Sana, Storsjøen and fishing
The family-friendly sandy beach Sana is near Åkrestrømmen at the northern end of Storsjøen; it has shallow water and a soft sandy bottom. There is space to play, swim and sunbathe. Sana is signposted from the centre of Åkrestrømmen and is easy to find. Conditions vary by season; if you are planning a day at the beach, it is best to check conditions before your visit.
Fishing is also part of the character of the place: Åkrestrømmen is known as a fishing spot for vendace, called sik in Norwegian, between Lomnessjøen and Storsjøen. Nearby, Fred from May & Fred’s Fiske/Fritid accompanies guests to good fishing spots in the area as an experienced fishing guide. Guiding is available on request, so arrange a time in advance.
Winter, culture and local traditions
The nearby Renåfjellet has a family-friendly ski area with three runs. Together, they are 4,000 metres long, with a vertical drop of 215 metres. The number of runs, their combined length and the vertical drop give a concrete impression of the ski area’s size, without making any claim about the difficulty level.
Åkrestrømmen Culture Park shows another side of the place: it has statues and busts of three men who have achieved great things in their respective sports. A few kilometres south of Åkrestrømmen, along Fv237, is Dampbåtvika, a cultural site in the surrounding area.
Local food culture is reflected in the flatbread from Østerdalen Hjemmebakeri AS. It is baked on a hot griddle; each loaf is traditionally baked and folded by hand. Since 1985, the bakery has been based in its current premises at Åkrestrømmen Foretningssenter in Rendalen. The bread combines a specific baking method with a long-standing local tradition.
A look at Rendalen
The marked pilgrim trail heads into Rendalen to the southeast, passing Munkbetsetra, going past Søndre Osdalssjøen, through Osdalen, over Østvollen and Renåtangen, and via Søljerøsta to Åkrestrømmen. This makes it possible to consider the place as part of a longer route through Rendalen, without assigning the individual sections a walking time or distance that has not been specified here.
Another distinctive landscape feature in Rendalen is Jutulhogget. The gorge has walls up to 240 m high and is between 150 and 500 m wide. There is a car park, toilets and places to rest at the western end. A good path leads to Veslehogget and into central parts of the gorge; there are several viewpoints into the gorge along the entire northern rim. These regional highlights complement Åkrestrømmen’s local attractions without being treated as part of the place itself.
Choosing a location
From Åkrestrømmen, the Fv217 county road leads to Femundsenden; there are also road connections to Rena on the eastern side of Storsjøen. The place offers a range of themes to focus on when planning: the marked route and water, fishing, culture or the nearby ski area. If you would like to explore Rendalen more broadly, the pilgrim trail and Jutulhogget are also options. Considering which of these perspectives suits your trip can help you narrow down the location you want for your holiday apartment. Check current road conditions before driving.
