Engerdal sentrum lies at an elevation of about 470 metres at the bottom of a valley running from north to south. The Engeråa flows through the centre, and Lake Lille Engeren borders the central areas. The river, lake and local history give Engerdal sentrum a distinctive character. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between this local setting and the wider natural area of the broader Engerdal destination.

The Engeråa, riverbanks and paths

The Engeråa is not just a river in the centre; it also shapes the area's natural and recreational spaces. The meandering stretch of stream, with its natural riverbanks, is classified as locally important (C). Important recreational areas lie along the Engeråa, including the bathing area where it flows into Lake Engeren. This describes a specific connection with the water, but does not replace checking current conditions on site.

The paths can also be distinguished by their location: a surfaced footpath runs west of the river along the Engeråa below Engerdal Church. Another newly built footpath runs between the Engeråa and the cemetery. In the town centre, the Engeråa below the church and the cemetery serve as two distinct landmarks. Baggroa Park has been newly developed as a central recreational area and complements the riverside areas.

If you want water and nature to shape your trip, Engerdal sentrum offers several different points of interest: the river, its natural banks, the bathing area at the river mouth and the paths around the town. If you are more interested in architectural history and art, you can focus your visit elsewhere.

Church, vicarage and art in Engerdal sentrum

Engerdal Church and its associated cemetery are centrally located in the town centre and are important cultural heritage sites and landscape features. The listed church is a timber-built, long-church structure; it was consecrated in 1873. The Engerdal vicarage dates from 1893 and was renovated later. It too is an important cultural heritage site and a defining landscape feature.

Baggroa is home to Abakus, a sculpture installation comprising seven parts. It honours Egil A. Hylleraas’ pioneering work in quantum mechanics and in calculating the helium atom. The town centre therefore brings together different kinds of culture: historic buildings and an installation whose subject comes from science. Families and other travellers can shape the day around their own interests without reducing the town centre to just one theme.

The wider Engerdal destination

Across the broader Engerdal destination, the landscape is shaped by mountain plateaus, lakes, rivers and forests; most of the wilderness lies 600 to 800 metres above sea level. The national parks are also part of this wider area, not just Engerdal sentrum. Femundsmarka lies between Lake Femunden and the Swedish border, in the municipalities of Røros and Engerdal. Gutulia National Park lies south of Femundsmarka, near the Swedish border in the municipality of Engerdal.

Femundsmarka is described as having countless kilometres of marked hiking trails. Those interested in the terrain can also follow animal tracks or watercourses there. Canoeing and packrafting are possible on the tranquil lakes and meandering rivers in the national park. These nature and activity options broaden the perspective beyond Engerdal sentrum and can help you choose the focus of your trip.

Culture and landscape can also be combined across the wider destination: the Blokkodden Wilderness Museum provides information about forestry, agriculture, hunting, fishing, South Sámi culture and Engerdal’s connection to the Røros copper works. A 1.5-kilometre universally designed boardwalk runs through the museum. It passes through birch forest, across marshland and uneven terrain, and ends at a small fishing pier on the Hyttelva; it is also suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. The exhibition at the visitor centre for Femundsmarka and Gutulia national parks covers local history, South Sámi reindeer husbandry and wildlife; exhibition details may change, so check before your visit.

Finding your bearings when looking for accommodation

The Destinasjon Femund Engerdal tourist office is located at Engerdal Torg in the centre of Engerdal. As the location of visitor services may change, check its location before your trip. When looking for a holiday apartment in Engerdal, you can first decide whether you would rather base your stay on the cultural and riverside themes of Engerdal sentrum or on the wider natural and recreational area of Engerdal.
