Elverum: The Glomma, history and experiences

Historical traces and open spaces

Christiansfjeld festning is an abandoned fortification in Leiret, in the centre of Elverum. The area is historically significant and preserves traces of earlier military activity; remnants of the walls remain. Today it serves as a local recreation area for walks, exercise and relaxation. There is also a disc golf park here.

Elvarheimparken is in the centre of Elverum, below the town hall. It has a playground, exercise equipment and a bandstand for concerts and events. The Sagtjernet bathing spot is just north of the centre. Its facilities include a diving tower, a jetty, climbing frames, a pirate ship and a beach volleyball court, as well as exercise equipment, a barbecue area, toilets and benches.

Swimming and the use of non-motorised watercraft are permitted in Elverum’s rivers and bodies of water, provided there are no drinking water restrictions. Elverum also has four geographical fishing areas.

Museums and culture in Elverum

Two major museums are recommended for visits to Elverum: Anno Norsk skogmuseum and Glomdalsmuseet. With a national remit, Anno Norsk skogmuseum focuses on hunting, trapping, fishing, forests, forestry and the forest industry. At Glomdalsmuseet, Elverumstunet is the centrepiece; the museum park comprises 93 buildings dating from 1612 to 1940. One combined ticket is valid for both museums. The walk from Glomdalsmuseet to Norsk skogmuseum through the open-air areas takes ten minutes.

Kafè Anno at Glomdalsmuseet serves open sandwiches, light meals and cakes, as well as hot and cold drinks. Festspillene i Elverum is also part of the town’s cultural life: it has been held since 1974 and takes place over ten days in August.

Cycling and hiking

Elverum offers several varied cycling routes. National Cycle Route 9, also known as “Villmarksruten”, runs through Elverum and leads from Halden to Trondheim. In addition to this long-distance route, there are several cycling routes to choose from in Elverum. The hiking trail network in Elverum covers more than 200 kilometres; the forests are also suitable for cycling.
