Explore Kven culture and polar history
The Vadsø Museum – Ruija Kven Museum is the local museum for the municipality and has national responsibility for the culture and history of the Kvens, also known as Norwegian Finns, a national minority. The permanent exhibition “Kohtaaminen Jäämeren kans – Møtet med Ishavet” focuses on this culture. Bietilægården in Indrebyen also offers insights into the architecture and culture of the Kvens and Norwegian Finns; its quay is part of the historic site.
At Tuomainen Farm, you can visit several buildings: the dwelling house, barn, stable, smithy, bakery and sauna. Together, these places complement a museum visit, with both a themed exhibition and historic buildings to explore. If you are interested in polar history, the airship mast in Vadsøya Cultural Park is one of the area’s most distinctive memorials. The “Airships and Boats” exhibition at the Hurtigruten quay displays local fishing boats and tells the story of Amundsen and Nobile’s airship expeditions to the North Pole in the 1920s.
Vadsøya and trails through the town
Vadsøya Cultural Park preserves traces of Vadsø’s earliest history and numerous cultural monuments from both earlier and more recent periods. Its cultural trail is about 1.8 kilometres long, runs over flat terrain and is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. It is a practical option for a trip with children or a route without any inclines. Vadsøya is also an important wetland for ducks and waders, and is known for its particularly diverse birdlife.
Another way to explore the town is the cultural trail through old Vadsø. It runs between Prestelva in the west and Landhuselva in the east, passing through Indrebyen, Midtbyen and Vadsøya before reaching Ytrebyen. Along this longer route, you can get to know the neighbourhoods and cultural sites. The trail in the park and the cultural route through old Vadsø are two different walks, each with its own character.
Hikes and nature around Vadsø
For a longer summer hike, the route to Nattfjelldalen and the waterfall on the Sjåbuselva River starts in Vadsø. The round trip is 18 kilometres and takes about six to seven hours. In Vestre Jakobselv, also in Vadsø municipality, a trail leads to the Solvarden Øst day-use cabin: it stands at 309 metres above sea level, and the route is 3.07 kilometres each way. Outdoor recreation, especially salmon fishing, plays an important role on the Vestre Jakobselv River; it is considered a good river for salmon and trout fishing.
Ekkerøy also offers a variety of natural attractions and places to visit. In summer, you can visit the exhibitions and café at the Kjeldsen fish-processing plant, 13 kilometres east of Vadsø. Store Ekkerøy is a peninsula with a fishing village in Vadsø municipality, 15 kilometres east of the town centre. On its western side are bird cliffs that form part of Ekkerøya Nature Reserve, as well as sandy beaches. Vadsø is also one of the larger towns along the Varanger National Tourist Route.
