Skarsvåg: Fishing Village, Harbor Life and Kirkeporten

Skarsvåg combines the character of a fishing village with impressive natural experiences in the surrounding area. In the village, you can walk along the quay, look at fishing nets and buoys, and photograph boats in the harbor. Just outside the village is Kirkeporten: a natural rock formation whose opening reveals a view of the North Cape Horn on the opposite side of the bay. Experience the Harbor and Fishing

Skarsvåg is described as the northernmost fishing village in the world. For a close-up impression of the harbor, take a walk along the quay, where you can see fishing nets and buoys up close and photograph boats. Those particularly interested in fishing will find a comprehensive fishing camp at Cape Marina. Deep-sea fishing for halibut and cod is offered there. Guests can also use an Arctic sauna with sea views and go ice swimming in the Barents Sea in both winter and summer.

Walk to Kirkeporten

A hiking trail leads from Skarsvåg to Kirkeporten. The round trip takes about two hours. The trail is considered easy to moderate and is well marked in summer. Take these conditions into account when planning your day, especially if you intend to hike in the cold season.

Kirkeporten is a remarkable natural rock formation just outside the village. The opening offers a spectacular view of the North Cape Horn on the other side of the bay. The area around Kirkeporten near Skarsvåg has midnight sun in summer and northern lights in winter. Local Traditions and History

Since 2021, a market day has been held every year at Daniels Hus to mark the end of the summer season. Visitors can buy homemade boknafisk, fish cakes, reindeer meatballs, cakes and freshly baked bread; coffee and cake are also served. The market day offers insight into local food and a seasonal tradition.

Another place with its own distinctive character is Skarsvåg Church. The wooden long church dates from 1961 and has 60 seats. It is located right by the road leading down to Skarsvåg from the E69. The building offers a cultural contrast to the harbor and rocky landscape.

Getting There and Choosing a Holiday Destination

The public bus service to Skarsvåg runs on request and must be booked at least four hours in advance. Keep this requirement in mind if you plan to take the bus to or from Skarsvåg.
