An unusual stop along the route

The Snefjord rest area is one of three facilities along the 66-kilometre National Tourist Route on the RV889 between Kokelv and Havøysund. Snefjord is also one of the designated rest-area and viewpoint stops on the Havøysund National Tourist Route. This makes it clear for your route planning that the place is part of a longer road journey, rather than a destination in its own right. The rest area has a car park and seating in three cube-shaped shelters. Each shelter is open on two sides, has a built-in bench and stands on short steel supports above the ground.

The seating arrangement is also a distinctive feature: when visitors look out to sea, they cannot see one another; on the landward side, there is more visual contact. The two viewing directions therefore create different spatial experiences. The rest area is also close to the beach. The river mouth, beach and distinctive seating shelters give a stop here a tangible connection to the place, rather than reducing it to a simple stop on the RV889.

Coastal community and Sámi influence

Snefjord is a Sámi coastal community. Small farms are scattered across the cultural landscape, which has traditionally been shaped by the combination of agriculture and fishing. In summer, Sámi reindeer herds are found in the area around Snefjord. Hiking and scenery around Snefjord

The area along the Snefjordvassdraget is ideal for long hikes. Krokelvdalen is also mentioned as a destination for long hikes. These two options offer different named landscape areas for anyone wanting to include longer walks in their plans. The lower reaches of the Snefjordvassdraget also feature distinct terminal moraine zones and raised beaches. These landforms add a geological perspective to the area’s cultural character.

There is also something to bear in mind if you’re arriving by bicycle: nearby, the Havøysund National Tourist Route can be combined with National Cycle Route 1; it also runs along EuroVelo 1, the “Atlantic Coast Route”. However, this section is not signposted as a cycle route.
