Åros: River, coastal paths, and architectural history
Accommodation in Åros
Åros lies at the mouth of the Åroselva in the municipality of Asker. With its river history, coastal walks, and older buildings, the area offers several perspectives for a stay. The Åroselva connects a history of use with opportunities for trout and salmon fishing; there is also the Kyststien by the sea, paths in Årosmarka, and Vervenstranda. A wooden church, a protected stone building, and the history of a riverside factory add to the picture.
Fishing in the Åroselva
In the 17th century, the Åroselva was known for pearl fishing for freshwater pearl mussels. The river also offers opportunities for trout and salmon fishing. Røyken & Åros JFF organizes fishing together with Åros elveierlag; check local arrangements before making plans.
Buildings and local history
Åros kirke was built of timber and stands on granite walls. It is a wooden long church dating from 1903, designed by Alfred Christian Dahl and inaugurated on 28 July 1903. The protected stone building at Åros store dates from 1696. Another chapter of local history leads to the Åroselva: Røyken Klædesfabrik was founded in 1898 at a waterfall on the Åroselva. The buildings and the factory’s history mark different chapters in the area’s past.
Walking and swimming
The Kyststien offers walking opportunities along the sea. From Åros, it crosses Hurumveien and follows Ivers vei for about 3 km; this route largely follows the old road between Åros and Sætre. Årosmarka has an extensive network of paths, as well as walking opportunities and fishing waters. When choosing an area for a holiday apartment, it helps to distinguish between the named section, which is about 3 km long, and the larger network of paths: you can weigh whether you prefer a general sense of the route or a wider choice of paths and waters. Vervenstranda in Åros offers opportunities for swimming and recreation.
Pastries and trip planning
Bryggerhuset at Frøtvedt in Åros serves fresh pastries on some days of the week. If you plan to visit, check the opening days in advance.
In the wider destination of Asker
The wider destination of Asker offers more cultural and nature-related sights. Sem Sagbruk began operating in 1612 and is living industrial heritage owned by the Asker Museum. The Oslofjordmuseum displays historic leisure boats and covers topics such as marine pollution and the construction of the polar ship Maud. At the museum, children can build boats powered by rubber bands and test them in an indoor pool. The coastal path passes directly by the Oslofjordmuseum; there are sandy beaches in Vollen and at Sjøstrand. The Asker Museum also includes the artists’ homes of Tilla and Otto Valstad, and Hulda and Arne Garborg.
