Gol: Cultural History and Active Discoveries

Gol combines cultural and historical discoveries with opportunities for active days. In the centre and on the slopes above it, you’ll find places where you can learn about the region’s history; Hallingmo Activity Park offers a different focus. Wooden houses, farm history and a stave church

Gol Bygdemuseum is located on one of Gol’s oldest farms, on the slope above the centre. It showcases traditional Norwegian wooden houses and a historic farm. The oldest storehouse on the site dates from 1750—a tangible reminder of the farm’s long history. The museum is close to the site of the stave church and Gol Church, making it a cultural and historical highlight above the centre.

Gol stave church on Storeøyne is a faithful copy of the original 12th-century stave church. Its reconstruction was completed and consecrated in 1994 after extensive work by local craftsmen. If you’re interested in traditional architecture, you can distinguish the history of the original church from its more recent reconstruction. Hesla Gård also reaches far back into the past: the farm was mentioned in historical sources as early as 1528. The farm is also home to the building Doktorgården, also known as Heslagammeln, which was built between 1830 and 1899.

Get active at Hallingmo

Hallingmo Activity Park is located just above the centre of Gol. Its trail centre includes flow trails, a skills course and jump lines for different ability levels. The different features give you several ways to plan an active day. If you want to prioritise exercise when choosing accommodation, you can make this park one of the key places to visit during your stay; its location above the centre is a useful point of reference.

Walk to historic sites

The Hallingmo Art and Culture Trail links the centre of Gol with the historic Renslotunet, a ten-minute walk away. There you’ll find a preserved former cotter’s farm, now used as an outdoor recreation area. The trail therefore combines a walk from the centre with a historic site that is now an outdoor recreation area. An information sign at Heslabrua in the centre points to another way to include historic buildings and places in your exploration of Gol: it provides information about a historic walking route that passes several historic buildings and sites.

Gol Bygdemuseum and the activity park are both above the centre; the culture trail leads from the centre to Renslotunet. This means you can choose a holiday rental based on the experiences that matter most to you during your stay.
