Eidsvoll between cultural history and active exploration
Accommodation in Eidsvoll
Eidsvoll combines places of remembrance with cultural offerings and opportunities to explore the area on foot or by bike. When planning your trip, you can choose different focuses: at Eidsvoll bygdetun, learn about life in the past and the history of the local community, while Eidsvoll kirke and other monuments offer insights into Norwegian history. A cycling route and several paths in the area also provide options for a more active stay.
Culture and local life in the centre
Panorama Cinema and Cultural Centre is located in the centre of Eidsvoll. Concerts, performances and lectures are held there. The auditorium has 291 seats for stage events. Eidsvoll Hovedbibliotek is in the same building in Sundet. If you would like to plan a cultural evening during your trip, this is a specific venue to consider; the library and cinema also share a building. You can check separately when planning your trip which events will take place during your stay.
The railway is also part of the area's history: Norway's first railway, from Kristiania to Eidsvoll, opened in 1854. Eidsvoll was initially its terminus. There was a landing stage at the station, where goods could be transferred to boats on Lake Mjøsa. This history thus connects rail travel with the transport of goods by water. If you are interested in the development of transport and trade, you can include this part of the area's history alongside its cultural and historical attractions.
History at Eidsvoll bygdetun and the church
Eidsvoll bygdetun in Hammerstad comprises 29 buildings that depict a rural community in the 18th and 19th centuries. You can walk among the historic buildings and learn more about how people lived in the past and how the local community developed. The Okkupasjonsmuseet at the bygdetun covers a different chapter: it shows how occupation and resistance unfolded in Eidsvoll during the Second World War. Everyday history and wartime history are thus presented side by side.
Even outside the museum's opening hours, the barbecue area, activity trail and open-air stage at Eidsvoll bygdetun are freely accessible all year round. This gives you a separate option for planning a visit to the area independently of the museum. The members of the Norwegian Constituent Assembly met at Eidsvoll kirke on 10 April 1814. The cruciform church dates from around 1190 and is situated at Tingvollen above the town centre; from there, you can enjoy a view of Eidsvoll and the Vorma. A statue of Camilla Collett, Henrik Wergeland's sister, stands not far from the church.
Paths, the Vorma and cycling
For a walk, the Sundet–Wergelandshaugen–Eidsvoll prestegård route starts at Bankplassen in Sundet. You can reach Sundtoppen via a path from Sundgata or by taking the steps behind Sushi Woki and Thaimat. The two routes described therefore differ in their layout.
The Vorma also provides several points of reference: Eidsvoll has two central visitor berths used by boats on the river. One is by the old bridge, next to the outdoor restaurant there; the other is by the new bridge, near the log driver monument. If you are travelling by boat, you can consider these two landing places as specific destinations. The monument “Den knelende soldat” stands in Sundgata at the western end of the old Sundbrua bridge over the Vorma, south of Eidsvoll's old railway station.
For cyclists, the 82 km section of National Cycle Route 7, Pilgrimsruta, between Oslo and Eidsvoll is of interest; it is considered moderately difficult. Take the stated total distance and the described difficulty level into account when choosing your route. Whether you focus on local history, culture, walks or cycling can also shape your search for a holiday rental in Eidsvoll. You can also find pages for nearby places here: Råholt, Minnesund and Dal.
