Nesøya: Nature, Walking Route and Architecture

Nesøya combines distinctive natural areas with a family-friendly circular route, small sandy beaches and a remarkable house from Norwegian architectural history. Nesøytjern is located in the Asker archipelago; Herrodd was the home Magnus Poulsson designed for his family. Bus route 265 also serves Nesøya, stopping at Søndre Brygge.

Architecture and History on Nesøya

Herrodd was the home of architect Magnus Poulsson, which he designed for his own family. The house is regarded as a major work of Norwegian architectural history from its era. Its protected status also covers the garden and the grounds immediately around the building. Herrodd is therefore interesting not only for its architecture: the protected setting also includes the garden and the immediate surroundings. The history of the house offers a cultural counterpoint to a stay focused on nature and walking routes.

Another historical landmark is Nesøya gård. The farm was formerly a noble manor and the main estate of the Nesøy estate. Its former significance sets it apart from Herrodd, whose history is connected to the architect and his own home. Both places offer different perspectives on Nesøya’s past.

Limestone Forest, Marsh and Lake in the Nature Reserve

Nesøytjern is located on Nesøya in the Asker archipelago. North of the lake, within the nature reserve, lies a nationally significant stretch of lime forest. The area also includes species-rich spruce-limestone forest with sparse ground vegetation, nutrient-rich fens and a calcareous lake. Relatively intact lowland forests are also among the protected landscape features.

The forest types range from deciduous forest to limestone forest and forest with sparse ground vegetation. Together with the marsh areas and the calcareous lake, they create a varied natural landscape that differs clearly from a trip focused solely on beaches or architecture. The nature reserve has a network of roads and paths. Nesøya Rundt and Days Outdoors

The Nesøya Rundt route is about 3 to 4 km long and suitable for all generations. It can be completed with a stroller, scooter or bicycle, as well as on foot. At the outer end of Nesøya, there is also an option for spending time by the water: Hvamodden is a small sandy beach. It has a pier and bathing ladder. The facilities also include a large lawn with play equipment and a sandbox for children, as well as benches and tables. In addition to the beach, Hvamodden therefore offers specific places to play and sit. Hestesund is also a small sandy beach, but is used mainly by local residents.
