Harbour and maritime history in Brouwershaven

Brouwershaven was founded around 1285 as a new harbour for Brijdorpe, whose harbour had silted up. Brouwershaven’s maritime history includes fishing and trade in, among other things, wine, beer, wood and flax. Brouwershaven has 59 entries in the Dutch Rijksmonumenten Register. De Nicolaas is a Rijksmonument that is more than 700 years old. Guided tours at De Nicolaas are available for individual visitors and groups; the visit can therefore be planned either alone or as part of a group. A guided tour at De Nicolaas can be scheduled as a separate cultural appointment alongside the walking tour and the museum visit. Individual visitors and groups can therefore include the tour at De Nicolaas in different daily itineraries.

Jacob Cats and Brouws Museum

Brouwershaven is the birthplace of Jacob Cats. In Brouwershaven, you can take a Jacob Cats town walk. The town walk is therefore a separate offering alongside a guided tour at De Nicolaas or in the Brouws Museum. Both forms can be planned as separate programme items within a cultural day. The town walk takes place in the town itself and therefore differs from the explicitly available guided tours at De Nicolaas and in the Brouws Museum.

Guided tours are available at the Brouws Museum. The Brouws Museum displays various objects that illustrate life and work at sea and in the harbour during that period. The Brouws Museum also displays instruments used to determine location at sea or on the coast, some of the 2,000 gold trade coins from the 15th to the 17th century found in Brouwershaven, as well as models of ship weapons. Those who explore Brouwershaven’s maritime past there encounter specific objects from everyday life, navigation, trade and shipping. A guided tour can complement the museum visit as an additional cultural appointment alongside the Jacob Cats town walk and De Nicolaas. The museum tour is a separate appointment in addition to viewing the displayed objects and models.

Lake Grevelingen, marina and water sports

The municipal harbour in Brouwershaven is specifically set up to accommodate recreational boats. Brouwershaven Marina offers opportunities for sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking and fishing. At Sea Yachting offers sailboats and sloops for hire in Brouwershaven. Brouwershaven Marina also carries the recognised „Blue Flag“ quality and safety certification. For a stay on Lake Grevelingen, this means that there is both a harbour for recreational boats and specific opportunities for various activities on the water. The water-based offerings of At Sea Yachting and the marina can be considered two different options when planning your day. The water sports opportunities and the rental offering are each expressly associated with Brouwershaven.
