History and art in Geersdijk

Geersdijk was laid out as a Vorstraat village. The Provincialeweg forms the dike, which the Burgemeester P. Wissestraat meets at a right angle. The origins of the present-day village are also clearly dated: Geersdijk was rebuilt in 1668 after the medieval settlement failed to survive the various storm surges. The village structure and its history therefore give a stay a specific historical connection. Those interested in culture will find two points of reference in Geersdijk: the rebuilding of the present-day village in 1668 and Aerpel from March 2026.

The public artwork “Aerpel” adds an unusual accent. It was created in Geersdijk in March 2026. Aerpel is a monumental, reclining potato sculpture made of recycled hardwood, three metres wide and 1.76 metres high. A walking path was laid out around the sculpture; there is also a bench from which visitors can look out over the landscape. At three metres wide, Aerpel is wider than it is high; its height is 1.76 metres.

The “Geersdijk en Emelisse” hiking route

The 13 km “Geersdijk en Emelisse” hiking route starts at the Provincialeweg bus stop in Geersdijk. It follows a creek that recalls the former Wijtvliet River. Along the hiking route, Lake Veere lies to the right of the path. A harbour for transporting sugar beets was established at the mouth of the Wijtvliet in 1808. The route therefore combines impressions of the landscape with traces of the former use of the water. For planning your day, the 13-kilometre length remains the key factor. The start at the Provincialeweg bus stop marks the entry point into Geersdijk.

Flowers, pumpkins and seasonal impressions

The Pompoentuin is open during pumpkin season, from the beginning of August to the end of October. The Pluktuin includes more than 60 flower species, a perennial garden and a dahlia picking garden. In addition to a terrace with a picnic table, there are instructions on picking, as well as scissors and rubber bands. Anyone wishing to visit the Pompoentuin should plan their visit for the period from the beginning of August to the end of October. The terrace with a picnic table complements the Pluktuin with a place to sit.

De Pompoenwinkel is located at ’t Hof Geersdijk, just outside the centre of Geersdijk. It is housed in a renovated 1890 machinery barn, part of which has been set up as a farm shop. Its location just outside the centre spatially separates the Pompoenwinkel from the village centre.
