Borsele: holiday apartments and holiday homes

Borsele is characterised by scenic landscapes, museums, historic sites and leisure activities. Around the restored Hoeve Van der Meulen farmhouse, which dates from the 17th century, are tall-standard orchards, species-rich fields, hedgerows and hummocky pastures; the area illustrates what the landscape looked like over the centuries. The municipality of Borsele is also known as Zak van Zuid-Beveland – a name that repeatedly becomes visible in the natural and cultural landscapes described here.

Nature and landscape

Zwaakse Weel is one of the largest nature reserves in Zak van Zuid-Beveland. A walking route starts at the information centre near Zwaakse Weel. In summer, cycling tours follow flower-lined dykes; at Zwaakse Weel, a broad channel, fields and old cultivated plants are in full bloom. Circular walking routes that can be combined with one another start at Hoeve Van der Meulen.

Borsele Beweegt offers self-guided walking routes through Landschapspark Borsele, which can be explored independently and at flexible times. A 53-kilometre cycling route runs through Landschapspark Borsele, follows the cycle-node network and can be shortened as desired.

Travelling by rail and road

Stoomtrein Goes-Borsele offers a nostalgic train ride on its own museum railway line and connects Goes with Hoedekenskerke. Its historic character lies not only in the train ride itself, but also in the museum railway line operated specifically for this purpose.

History and culture

The Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland presents the history of Zeeland during the Second World War. Fort Ellewoutsdijk was built between 1835 and 1839; visitors can explore its underground rooms. Slot Baarland dates from the early 14th century and, during its heyday, was one of the larger castles in Zeeland. The castle can be visited on various open days.

Hoeve Van der Meulen also preserves the history of everyday life. The original living quarters of Hoeve Van der Meulen have been furnished as a museum apartment and show how the farm’s former residents lived. Nearby stands the De Hoop en Verwachting windmill, a working grain mill built in 1714 just outside the village of Borssele.

’t Wienkeltje van Wullempje focuses on life in Zuid-Beveland. Historical box beds are on display there, including one with a baby cradle, as well as old objects and dolls dressed in Zuid-Beveland costume. The museum also conveys the atmosphere of the years 1930 to 1950. Thus, alongside major historical themes, the focus is also on domestic culture, clothing and familiar objects from everyday life.

Leisure and discoveries

Tropical Zoo includes attractions such as De Spettertuin, Kids Jungle, Adventure Minigolf, De Natuurklas, Dino Expo, Fossielenmijn, Schat Zoeken, De Natuurzolder and Buitenspeelbos. Pluimweide Park has an 800-metre-long miniature railway, remote-controlled boats, a water-splashing game and an observation tower in a water maze.

Local character

The local scene also includes numerous stalls selling fresh vegetables and fruit along the roads in the municipality of Borsele. One regional speciality is the Zeeuwse Bolus, a local Zeeland confection.
