Art and urban history in Amersfoort

The Mondriaan House is the birthplace of Piet Mondrian. There, you can explore his life, his iconic work, his spiritual influences, his interests and his friends. The exhibition ends in a do-it-yourself studio where you are allowed to create your own work of art.

The Museum Amersfoort also combines buildings and history in a special way. It is housed in three late-medieval wall houses that were built on the old city wall. From 17 July 2026, the permanent exhibition “Amorfortia” takes visitors through the city’s history spanning centuries. The museum’s Maak Mee Atelier also offers a creative activity or workshop.

Historic buildings and special observations

The Koppelpoort is a land and water gate dating from 1400 and was part of Amersfoort’s former city wall. Guided tours are offered at the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren. A complete tour through and onto the Koppelpoort takes about 30 minutes and is led exclusively by a guide from Gilde Amersfoort. The Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren is over 98 metres high and is one of the tallest late-medieval towers.

Since 2013, a pair of peregrine falcons has used the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren as its habitat, and the falcons can regularly be seen on the tower. A walk through Amersfoort can therefore combine architectural details with an opportunity to observe nature.

The Muurhuizen consist of houses built from around 1500 onwards along the former city wall, using material from the old city wall.

Water, routes and local experiences

Themed boat trips with the Waterlijn focus on nature, art, culture or special historic sites. Those who prefer to explore Amersfoort on foot can find another thematic perspective in the “Amersfoortse Pareltjes” route: it runs through an area on the eastern bank of the Eem and leads through a history shaped by the Eem over many centuries.
