Discover De Koog: Beach, Dunes and Nature

De Koog is a seaside resort: only a line of dunes separates the village from the beach and the sea. The beach can be reached directly on foot from the centre of De Koog. In addition to the coast, paths in and around De Koog lead through dunes, woodland and agricultural areas; nature observation and local history are also among the village’s attractions.

Beach and nature around De Koog

De Nederlanden borders De Koog. Cycling is also permitted on the wide path from De Nederlanden, which leads to De Slufter. The dune meadows of De Nederlanden are rich in bird species. When planning your day, both the direction towards De Slufter and the permitted use of bicycles are relevant here.

The Familiepad Alloo also passes through several types of landscape: dunes, woodland and agricultural areas. The Familiepad Alloo includes a birdwatching hide. The changing landscapes along the route are linked to a permanent birdwatching location.

Woodland paths and discoveries for children

The Sommeltjespad is a 1.5-kilometre children’s walking route through the woodland near De Koog. Along the route, children can look for Sommeltjes. The Sommeltjespad is located in the national park on Pelikaanweg, 1796 NT De Koog.

Ecomare in Duinen van Texel National Park

Ecomare is located in the heart of Duinen van Texel National Park. Ecomare is easily accessible by bus, bicycle and car. Take exit 13 from Pontweg; Ecomare is also included in the cycling network.

At Ecomare, visitors can see seals, birds, fish and other marine animals up close. Ecomare’s nature museum focuses on the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site, the North Sea and Texel. The site therefore combines animal observation with themes relating to the sea, the island and the Wadden Sea.

History and the summer market in De Koog

The church in De Koog dates from 1719 and is designated as a Rijksmonument, meaning a Dutch national monument. A village walk of around 2 kilometres leads through and around De Koog and focuses on the history of the seaside resort. The village walk is therefore around 500 metres longer than the Sommeltjespad; its theme is the history of the seaside resort, while the Sommeltjespad leads through the woodland and features the search for Sommeltjes.

The Koger Dinsdagen add a seasonal highlight to village life: the summer market takes place every Tuesday in July and August from 11:00 to 17:00. The fixed weekday and time slot clearly place the market within a planned daily itinerary during the summer months.
