Village history in the village landscape

The historic village core of Bleiswijk is formed by Dorpsstraat, Hoekeindseweg, Kerkstraat and Hoefweg. This historic setting is home to the “Nederlands Hervormde Kerk”, a single-nave village church with a five-sided apse dating from the first half of the 16th century. Its notable furnishings include an oak pulpit from 1622 and an oak baptismal screen.

The listed pleached lime trees near Dorpsstraat 5 are also among the visible historic details. They are almost 200 years old and stood in front of the “Snippenrust” estate. At the intersection of Hoekeindseweg and the later-built Lijsterlaan stands the “Hoop Vleit de Landman” farm, dating from the early 19th century. The Bleiswijkse Verlaat is a lock dating from around 1774 that was completely restored in 2015.

Further traces of history include the surviving remains of the octagonal water mill No. 1 of the “A” canal of the Bleiswijkse droogmakerij, which was partially demolished in 1915. The mill dates from 1772 and is equipped with an obliquely positioned paddle wheel. The horticultural chimney in Bleiswijk is 18 metres high and was built in 1952 from specially fired red radial bricks. The years 1772 and 1952 therefore mark two clearly distinct points in the local history of construction.
