The “Ommetje Steenwijkerwold” starts at Gelderingen 65–67, where free parking is available. The “De Voorzienigheid” walking route is approximately 5.5 kilometres long and is connected in Steenwijkerwold with the cultural and religious heritage of monastic life. The approximate route length provides a time frame for an independent walk without specifying a particular walking speed. When planning your own day, you can determine the breaks and your personal pace for this walk individually; this does not result in a fixed walking time along the way. The De Woldberg woodland offers a striking elevation experience: it rises 25 metres above the surrounding land. At the top of the observation tower, you are another 24 metres higher. The history of the area reaches back through various eras. After Prince Maurits conquered Steenwijk in 1592, Catholics secretly held their religious services at Erve Croeve. In 1893, the unconventional pastor Christiaan Muiteman came up with the idea of founding a refuge for elderly people and children in need in the village of Steenwijkerwold.
