Zalk offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay combining nature, activity, history and regional delights. The Laarzenpad Zalk trail runs along the IJssel and through meadows and woodland around Zalk. This landscape experience is complemented by Zalkerbos, the historic De Valk Mill and the Zalkerveer passenger ferry.
Paths through meadows, woodland and riverside landscapes
The Laarzenpad Zalk can be started at Kerkplein or at the car park of the Dorpshuis “An de Steege”, Broeksteeg 42, 8276 AG Zalk. The “Zalk met het pontje” route also starts in the centre of Zalk at Kerkplein. This provides different described starting points for walks and routes, without requiring the routes themselves to be equated with one another.
Zalkerbos is one of the oldest forests in Overijssel and a rare hardwood floodplain forest managed as coppice woodland. In Zalkerbos, visitors should remain on the paths because sensitive plants and ground-nesting birds occur there.
History along the way
Kasteel Buckhorst stood on this site until 1840. Another notable event took place in the autumn of 1826: A fisherman killed the last wild beaver in the Netherlands according to current knowledge, at the IJssel near Zalk. The Schultehuis was the former residence of the schult, dates from the early 17th century and is a Rijksmonument.
De Valk Mill and regional treats
De Valk Mill was built in 1860 on behalf of the miller Van Raalte as a grain and hulling mill. De Valk Mill combines its 1860 construction with its present-day operation as a flour mill. The working flour mill is opened every Saturday by volunteer millers. Groups can visit De Valk Mill outside regular opening hours by appointment; the millers offer guided tours and show the process from grain to flour.
Since October 2022, there has been a small farm shop in the lower section of De Valk Mill, selling flour and regional products. The tea house on the 's-Heerenbroeker side of the IJssel serves freshly ground coffee with a homemade filled biscuit or a slice of the famous apple pie. The Zalkerveer is a passenger ferry across the IJssel between the Dutch villages of Zalk and 's-Heerenbroek.
