Priona Gardens were designed in the late 1970s by Henk Gerritsen and Anton Schlepers, who trained as artists. More than 5,000 different plant species grow there; the gardens are managed organically without pesticides or artificial fertilisers. On the way to Priona Gardens, follow the Rondweg for 275 m to the right to the car park; from there, the route continues via a narrow footpath and a footbridge to the garden entrance.

Village history and memorial sites

The historic Schuinsche Sloot was created as a branch of the Hoofdvaart door Lutten to open up the Lutterveld from Slagharen. The ribbon village was given the name Schuinesloot in the 1970s. The name is derived from the Schuine Sloot waterway to the south, which has since been filled in.

The Dutch Reformed Chapel was built in 1916 on the site where Schuinesloot’s last sod hut still stood around 1900. Its prominent location in the village centre makes it a distinctive landmark. Until the 19th century, the area north of the Lutter Es, now encompassing Lutten and Oud-Lutten, was an almost uninhabited peatland; it was known as the Lutterveld.

The Schuinesloot war memorial commemorates nine crew members of two bombers that crashed in the village in 1941 and 1942, respectively. It stands on a strip of grass beside the car park near the Dutch Reformed Chapel on Schuineslootweg. There is also a memorial with an information board on Kikkertsveldweg commemorating the crash of a British Lancaster bomber. During the Second World War, Pastor Frederik Slomp, known as Frits de Zwerver, hid in Schuinesloot. The Wellington Mk.III DF639 AA-N crashed near Schuinesloot at 23:04. On 6 October, a Lost Wings information panel was unveiled in Schuinesloot.

Schuinesloot is one of the subareas of the Vechtdal nature region. Kavelbos is one of several narrow strips of woodland planted during land consolidation in the 1970s.
