Kolhorn between Dikes, Water and History

Kolhorn reveals its character where dikes and water meet streets, paths and the buildings alongside them. This interplay shapes the protected villagescape. In Kolhorn, the interplay between the water landscape and the organically developed villagescape shapes both the landscape and the history of the village.

Culture and Monuments in the Historic Village Centre

The Laurenskerk is a Rijksmonument and is used for concerts, exhibitions and weddings. At Kerkepad 3 stands a monument with a remarkable tower: the simple spire has eight sides. The tower also has a bell cast in 1418 by Willam Butendiic, with a diameter of 107 cm, as well as a mechanical tower clock mechanism dating from around 1780.

The history of the village is also visible along the dike. Five historic, black-tarred wooden sheds from the 19th century on the dike in Kolhorn are Rijksmonumenten. The De Turfschuur Museum is located in one of Kolhorn’s preserved historic peat sheds. The KH44 embodies a special connection with the area’s former seafaring tradition: it is the only surviving vessel from Kolhorn’s former, once extensive fishing fleet and is a Varend Monument.

Water-Based Experiences around Kolhorn

The Vaarroute rondje Kolhorn is suitable for canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking. The recently created route has three jetties where short breaks are possible. This makes it possible to plan time on the water by canoe, SUP or kayak without limiting the choice to a single leisure activity.

This year, Jachthaven Kolhorn received the international Blue Flag environmental award. This stands for a clean, safe and sustainable facility. A sailing trip of approximately 1.5 hours aboard the KH44 is also offered on the Kolhornerdiep. The regular Sunday departure at 3:00 p.m. costs €15 per person. Children up to 12 years old travel free, and a maximum of 10 people can participate. The approximately 1.5-hour duration makes the sailing trip easy to plan as a standalone activity in the day’s schedule.

Walks and Summer Evenings

Kolhorn has three themed walks. A free digital edition or a printed edition is available for a small fee. The three walks can be prepared digitally or in print for the day’s itinerary. Guided walks for groups of four or more people are also currently available. A seasonal highlight is the Kolhorn Night Market: it takes place on three summer evenings each year as an evening market through the protected historic village centre. The night market complements the walks with a seasonal evening event in the protected historic village centre.
