The province of Noord-Holland has designated Barsingerhorn as a protected village landscape. A characteristic landscape backbone is formed by the continuous strip of development along the Heerenweg from Barsingerhorn to Kolhorn. This Heerenweg is also a provincial monument. Buildings with regional history

The former Mennonite church at Heerenweg 48 was built by Pieter Brugman in 1862. It is culturally and historically significant as part of the history of Mennonite communities in Noord-Holland. The former church therefore fits into the exceptional concentration of historical themes that characterizes Barsingerhorn for interested visitors.

The Tramabri on the Heerenweg also tells the story of a former transport connection. It was built around 1910. The branch line of the N.V. Tramweg Wieringen-Schagen tramway ran from Barsingerhorn towards Wieringerwaard, with Van Ewijcksluis as its terminus. It opened on 1 March 1912 and was discontinued in 1936. The Tramabri currently serves as a starting point for walks.

Walking and cycling around Barsingerhorn

The 15-kilometre Westfriesedijkroute begins on the western side of Barsingerhorn, near the Tramabri. In addition, Barsingerhorn is the starting point for three signposted circular walks. Those travelling with children of different ages can use the varying route lengths as a guide when planning their day, without having to structure their stay around a single pace of excursions.

For cycling excursions, the “Langs dijken en dorpen” Monument Route is a good option. The approximately 30-kilometre cycling route passes through the countryside and leads past old, imposing houses, churches, farmhouses, and locks. This provides different options alongside one another: shorter walking routes and a longer cycling tour, allowing you to alternate active days with slower-paced discoveries in your travel plans.

Open landscapes and technical heritage

The Molenromp lies on the eastern edge of Barsingerhorn, on the north side of the Vaart, in an open setting. It is of considerable landscape significance. The Molenromp Barsingerhorn is part of a windmill built in 1907. For its construction, the dismantled mill “Het Wapen van Friesland”, a hulling mill built in Zaandam-Oost in 1761, was obtained.

An unusual detail of the village’s history has been preserved at the Stolpboerderij at Heerenweg 10: pipes leading to the old biogas installation opposite can still be found there. The black, round boiler was used to store biogas. This biogas was carried through thin pipes to houses nos. 3, 8, and 10, where it was used for lighting and cooking.

The historic buildings provide specific themes for short explorations, while the walking and cycling routes allow for different ways of structuring your day.
