Routes from Eenigenburg for different days
The Ommetje Nuwendore circular route starts at the Eenigenburg starting point, is 5.01 kilometres long, partly follows unpaved paths and does not allow dogs. Another option is the purple route: it also starts in Eenigenburg, is 6.8 kilometres long, partly follows unpaved paths and is closed during the bird breeding season.
The purple route crosses the Westfrisian Omringdijk, runs along both Burger Wielen and follows farm tracks and country roads through the polder north of Eenigenburg.
History along the Omringdijk
Near the Westfrisian Omringdijk in Eenigenburg, a castle was built in 1287 on the orders of Count Floris V; today it is known as ’t Huys te Nuwendore. The complex was built just 25 metres from the Friese Omringdijk. Flooding is considered the suspected cause of the demise of ’t Huys te Nuwendore. The connection between the castle site and the dike gives the historic part of Eenigenburg a clear relationship with the landscape.
Terps and birdwatching at the Wielen
’t Hoogt is the main terp of Eenigenburg and one of two terps that are still clearly visible in the landscape. The Wielen also shape the way the village is perceived: their area can be viewed well from the Westfrisian Omringdijk. The Wielen are frequently visited by ducks and geese, including large numbers of wigeons. This creates an excursion theme that combines visible settlement history with the observation of bodies of water and birds.
Sea-green route and Eenigenburg Museum
The sea-green route follows a farm track to the western edge of Tuitjenhorn and returns past the Dorpsmuseumpje in the hamlet of Surmerhuizen. There is also a detour to the Church Terp with its vicarage and sexton's house. Eenigenburg Museum presents the exhibition “Het Tijdskompas Eenigenburg” and tells the story of the Eenigenburg family's emigration to the USA. This makes it possible to combine a walk through the cultural landscape with a specific historical visit.
Farm culture with regional flavour
At the biodynamic Zuivelboerderij De Buitenplaats in Eenigenburg, visitors may watch and help milk 25 cows in the morning and evening. The milk is processed in a special room into traditional farm buttermilk, yoghurt, butter and milk.
