Nature experiences between water and trails

A holiday apartment in Vessem is a suitable choice if you want nature, local history and local culinary delights to come together in a single stay. The Kleine Beerze, themed circular trails and special places in the village offer various ways to plan your day.

The Kleine Beerze in Vessem is a Natura 2000 area and is afforded additional protection because of its special or rare plants and animals. The De Kleine Beerze nature area has walking trails, a forest garden, a village garden, a beach, a swallow wall and an observation tower. The De Mythe van de Kruidendokter audio route runs through the northern part of Vessem, along the Landschotse Heide and directly beside the Kleine Beerze.

The trails through the surrounding countryside also focus on different themes: the Ommetje Lantie Vessem circular trail passes a quarry where research was carried out into the Ice Age and runs through the valley of the Kleine Beerze. The Steengoede Sporen walking route follows paths, bridges and footbridges and passes the possible site of a former hunters’ camp. The Rondom het Rietven circular trail passes the remains of the Leeuwerik hoeve.

Cultural heritage in the village and along the circular trails

One of the notable historic destinations is the Jacobusmolen, a hilltop grain mill, or post mill, built in 1893. The tower of the Sint Lambertuskerk dates from the 15th century, approximately from 1475.

The Monumentenwandeling Vessem is a 45-minute, 1.7-kilometre cultural heritage walk along characteristic monuments in Vessem. It also includes the De Naald monument, which commemorates the village’s victims and resilience during the war years. The Pastorie next to the church dates from 1849; it was once home to several generations of pastors and a focal point of village life.

The 8-kilometre Ommetje Maaskant Vessem circular trail runs through the peaceful surrounding countryside and past the Hallenboerderij aan de Maaskant. The Hallenboerderij dates from the 14th century, is more than 600 years old and is one of the oldest surviving farmhouses in Noord-Brabant. The Ommetje Lille Vessem circular trail runs through Vessem’s historic centre. The Avia Xpress benzinepomp/museum displays vintage cars, motorcycles and old petrol pumps.

Local flavours and events

The Beerze Brouwerij in the heart of Vessem stands for locally brewed craft beers. There, visitors can discover local flavours and learn about the brewing process. The Proostfeest at the Beerze Brouwerij is a series of events; the 13th edition offered craft beer, good food and live music and was organised as a family day.

Fruit trees, hazelnuts and sweet chestnuts, as well as several hundred berry bushes, grow in the Voedselbos en dorpsmoestuin Vessem. The project is located on a one-hectare site where schoolchildren and other volunteers have planted around 1,250 trees and shrubs.

De Beijer Asperges in Vessem operates a vending machine that is open around the clock and offers complete meals. Payment there is possible only contactlessly by PIN. At the Kermis Vessem, there are rides and treats; the festival takes place every year from the Saturday before the first Sunday in October until the following Tuesday and is aimed at visitors of all ages.
