Holiday apartment in Dongen: Culture, Leisure and Nature
Dongen combines an illustrative local history with practical experiences, water-based activities, and nature in the immediate and wider regional surroundings. Between historic buildings, an Iron Age farmstead, hiking and cycling routes, there are also leisure destinations such as Pukkemuk and De Vennen.
Culture
Since 2011, Museum De Looierij has been housed in a Rijksmonument built as a tannery in 1890. The Looiroute there provides information about leather production, that is, tanning. The Oude Kerk adds another historic highlight: it dates back to the mid-14th century and is the only church ruin in Noord-Brabant. The open ruin of the former nave is a venue for celebrations and events.
The local history also includes the Watertoren Dongen from 1923 and the Koningin Wilhelmina windmill. This is a round stone windmill with a gallery, built in 1893 as a grain mill. The Koningin Wilhelmina windmill can be visited when its sails are turning, on Saturdays from 10:00 to 16:00, or by appointment. Cultuurhuis De Cammeleur complements the cultural offerings with theatre, music, courses, and exhibitions.
Experiences
At the IJzertijdboerderij, customs and activities from the Iron Age take centre stage, allowing visitors to experience them in an illustrative and practical way. This includes making a fire without matches. Visitors can also make their own clay pots and bowls there. In Dongen, Brouwerij Opener offers beer tastings.
Pukkemuk is a leisure park for visitors of all ages in Dongen. The grounds include a water play area as well as indoor and outdoor playgrounds. The De Vennen sports and health centre offers swimming and relaxation facilities, including a leisure pool, an outdoor pool, and a sauna. The leisure pool has a 50-metre water slide; it also includes an outdoor pool accessible from indoors, with a current channel.
Sport is also part of the local landscape: Golfcentrum Dongen has a landscaped 9-hole golf course set amid the surrounding Brabant nature.
Trails and Nature
The Toeristische Informatiepunt Dongen provides route maps and arranges various guided walks. The Broederpad forms a historic connection through the town. It passes 22 places where the brothers lived and worked from 1892 onwards. There is a short 4 km version of this route and a 7 km route.
The Tussen Donk en Vaart cycling route starts at Museum De Looierij. It can be cycled on a standard bicycle. Het Kandoel, a 12,000-square-metre nature area, lies on the outskirts of Dongen. Het Kandoel is open to everyone and can be used for walking and having lunch at picnic tables.
In the wider regional surroundings of Gemeente Dongen, the Efteling leisure park is approximately 7 kilometres away.
