Historic traces between farmhouse and canal
'S-Gravenmoer invites you to plan a trip that combines architectural history and landscape. Huis Vreeden Lust is a Langstraat farmhouse dating from around 1800, with older cellars and a Louis XVI-style sundial in its garden. The ’s-Gravenmoersche Vaart opens up a different historical perspective: it was constructed in the 16th century after an older canal to the west had silted up over the course of the 15th century. Ravensbosch at Vaartweg 25 is associated with the Bende van de Witte Veer. Together, the buildings and waterway represent different chapters in the history of 'S-Gravenmoer.
Churches with their own architectural history
The former Christelijk Gereformeerde Kerk stands at Waspikse Weg 5. The neo-Gothic building dates from around 1900/1923 and is now used as a residence. It is of cultural and historical significance for the development of the Reformed Church in the Langstraat, and is also considered a relatively rare example of a Reformed church in Noord-Brabant.
The Martinuskerk in 's Gravenmoer dates from the 15th century and is an example of Gothic architecture. A major fire destroyed all the roofs and vaults in 1672. The church was rebuilt around 1680, and its choir and nave were fitted with wooden barrel vaults. The sequence of medieval origins, destruction and reconstruction shapes the historical view of the building.
Water, dikes and paths through the surrounding area
Several paths and natural areas provide a perspective on the landscape. A natural Ecopad connects 's Gravenmoer with Dongen and Klein-Dongen-Vaart. The 30-kilometre Ronde door Gemeente Waalwijk passes by the village of 's Gravenmoer. Around the village, it follows picturesque dikes, runs along the Donge river and passes broad ditches that were once created for transporting peat. The length of the Ronde provides a useful point of reference for planning your own day; the Donge, Vaart and dikes offer a different experience from the historic churches.
A landscaped nature area complements this water-rich setting: Bieslant includes various tree and shrub species as well as grass strips. For a walk along the Donge and the ’s-Gravenmoerse Vaart, there is a car park at Dorpshuis De Geubel, Hoofdstraat 4, 5109 AC, ’s Gravenmoer.
Choose the right holiday apartment based on your travel interests
If you are looking for a holiday apartment in 's-Gravenmoer, a simple question can help you choose the location: should the focus be on churches and regional history, or on paths, water and nature? Huis Vreeden Lust, the former church on Waspikse Weg and the Martinuskerk give substance to the cultural side. Bieslant, the Donge, the ’s-Gravenmoersche Vaart and the Ronde door Gemeente Waalwijk form the landscape side. These two focal points provide a clear basis for choosing a holiday apartment according to your personal travel itinerary.
