Holiday apartment in Vortum Mullem between chapel and cultural heritage

The Cornelius Chapel in Mullem was first mentioned in a document dated 16 August 1424. For centuries, Mullem was a pilgrimage site for Sinte Knillis, where people prayed for protection against cramps, paralysis and nervous diseases, as well as for the healthy rearing of calves. The new parish church in Vortum-Mullem was consecrated on 14 February 1953 and dedicated to Saint Cornelius. It contains an oak statue of Saint Cornelius dating from around 1500. On 10 June 2017, the Church of Saint Cornelius was deconsecrated and converted into MFA Knillus. At the beginning of the 20th century, devotion to Saint Cornelius led to a week-long celebration around 16 September; on the main Sunday, a solemn procession took place after Mass. The historic Roman road through the Land van Cuijk also ran through Vortum-Mullem.

Hiking trails through the Maasheggen and Bergjes

For an active day, Vortum-Mullem offers several specific starting points. The IVN De Pontipad begins near De Schutkooi on Veerweg in Vortum-Mullem, where Veerweg leads into the Maasheggen area. The 7.7 km hiking trail “De Maasheggen op z’n mooist” begins at De Schutkooi, Veerweg 3 in Vortum-Mullem, between junctions 23 and 28. The Kapellenbaan is a route that you can follow by bicycle or car past modern and traditional works of art as well as existing cultural heritage sites in the Maasheggen area. A signposted cycle route along the Roman road also runs through the Maasheggen area. It follows numbered cycling junctions; sections of the historic route are marked by Roman field signs, information panels and Roman helmets embedded in the road surface.

Birdlife and a finely structured hedgerow landscape

The “De Maasheggen op z’n mooist” hiking trail leads over the drifting sand dunes known as the Bergjes and along a finely structured mosaic of Maasheggen in a floodplain where the hedges are preserved. In and around the Vortumse Bergjes, more than 40 different bird species breed in the Maasheggen and in the woodland on the elevations. As a result, a walk offers not only exercise and scenery but also a clear connection with birdlife.
