Hiking between short loops and longer trails

The Stramproy-Tungelroy hiking area offers eight routes. Six of them start at Stramproy’s church square; their lengths range from 3.5 km to 12.5 km. This range makes planning your day straightforward: you can plan a shorter route or opt for a longer trail. Along the routes, you will pass several windmills, chapels, the Areven and the Roman Bridge.

Around Stramproy, the Stramprooierbroek hiking area features a varied landscape with wet marshlands, alder and willow scrub, oak forests, meadows with hedgerows and ponds, as well as impressive oak avenues. Stramprooierbroek offers four circular routes ranging from 3.3 km to 10.2 km. The area borders the Stramproy hiking area, expanding the choice of landscapes and trail lengths.

Windmills and the History of Stramproy

Stramproy was first mentioned in 1244 under the name “Rode”; the name refers to cleared woodland. Sint Jan is the oldest post mill in Limburg. The present Broekmolen was built in 1738 and acquired its current form in 1868.

The Abeek, which powers the Broekmolen, forms the Dutch-Belgian border at the mill. The Broekmolen is also the only surviving watermill and, at the same time, the oldest mill in the municipality of Weert. De Nijverheid still has an authentic wooden shaft, which is considered unique, particularly for a larger mill.

Sint Willibrordus and Historical Details

The Sint Willibrordus parish church was built in 1923 in the Traditionalist style; its 15th-century tower was preserved. The church has cultural and historical value as a special expression of the development and emancipation of Roman Catholicism at the beginning of the 20th century.
