The Swalm is a fast-flowing, meandering tributary of the Maas. Along its Dutch course, the stream can still meander freely outside the villages; natural river bends can be seen around Groenewoud. The Swalmdal is a particularly valuable natural area where badgers live and have established their setts. A hike leads from dry sandy soils through ancient forests into a damp, green stream valley. Along the way, you cross wooden footbridges and pass beaver tracks. In the De Weerd section, the trail follows a rough boot path directly along the banks, while waterfowl can be seen among the reeds.

Hiking and cycling routes for different days

The Pieterpad runs directly through Swalmen. Swalmen is both the endpoint and the starting point for two stages of the Pieterpad. A 4.8 km circular hike in the Swalmdal begins at Herberg de Bos in Swalmen. The 6 km hike “Struinen door Asselt & De Weerd” leads from historic Asselt along the Maas through the rugged greenery of De Weerd. The approximately 14.5 km Boukoul en Swalmen riding route follows many unpaved paths and country roads through forests and agricultural land around Boukoul and Swalmen. The 19.6 km Swalmdalroute forms a loop around Swalmen and Boukoul and passes, among other places, the Asseltse Plassen and the Bosberggebied. For a longer cycling excursion, the 48 km route “Op de pedalen door ’t Maas- en Swalmdal” passes the oldest little church in Swalmen.

Asselt and Swalmen with historical highlights

Kasteel Hillenraad is a Dutch national monument, a Rijksmonument, in Swalmen. At the archaeological site “Asselts verleden”, an app featuring the virtual archaeologist Archie explains the history of Asselt and the significance of the finds at the site. The Romanesque hall church in Asselt was built in the 10th century; Asselt also has a Noormannenwandelroute. The stone Church Bridge in Swalmen bears a statue of Johannes Nepomucemus. The St. Lambertus Church on the Mert in Swalmen dates from 1896. At Raaystraat 3 there is a small woodland area known as a “doolhof”, covering approximately 1.5 hectares, which was probably laid out in the first half of the 19th century.
