Holiday apartment in Banholt: Discover the church, traditions and routes
Accommodation in Banholt
Banholt is a destination for travellers who want to combine local history, village traditions, outdoor activity and regional food during their holiday.
From medieval origins to a ribbon village
Banholt originated in the Middle Ages on the Margraten plateau, in an area reclaimed from the Voerstreek. From the 18th century onwards, the settlement developed into a ribbon village.
Church, windmill and a special tradition
The neoclassical Sint-Gerlachuskerk in Banholt was built between 1874 and 1876 according to plans by G. Jonkergouw and is based on the church in Berneau, Belgium. The church contains stained-glass windows by Gebr. Den Rooijen from 1911 and 1912. The construction period and furnishings therefore date from different decades.
The Windmolen van Banholt burned down in 1877; Honje(t) had it completely rebuilt in stone, giving it the form for which it later became known. In the old tradition known as “de den halen”, the village’s Jonkheid, meaning unmarried men, pull a pine tree from Epen to Banholt on the Saturday before Pentecost. The married men complete the tradition by erecting the pine tree beside the church.
Farms and quiet places in the village
The enclosed farm complex at Dalestraat 24 is made of brick and marl on a rubble-stone foundation. It dates from the early 18th century and the early 19th century. The originally L-shaped farm at Dalestraat 26 is now a residential house and dates from the second half of the 18th century and the second half of the 19th century. Banholt also has a Lourdes grotto.
Hiking, cycling and regional cuisine
For outdoor activity, the hiking route “Het Heuvelland door de ogen van een kunstenaar” passes through Banholt and Mheer. The “Sporen van vuursteen rondom Mheer” route has two loops; neither is suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. This specific restriction is important if you are planning your outings with small children or with mobility assistance.
The “Stap (of trap) & Hap Banholt” package offered by De Bresserie in Banholt combines an outdoor hike or cycle tour with freshly baked plaatgebak from Talentino, coffee, tea or cappuccino, regional dishes and a hiking lunch of your choice. This combines outdoor activity with a culinary break.
