Mesch: Discover the Voer, culture and trails

Mesch brings together landscapes, trails and architectural history. The Voer River flows through the village and rises just across the Belgian border. The Mescherhei, the Sint-Pancratius Church, hiking trails, the cycle route and Hoeve de Laethof each provide their own connection to the area.

The Voer and Mescherhei

A striking landmark is the Mesch observation tower, a modern lookout tower on the Mescherhei. It is 9 metres high and highlights the expansive panorama of the surrounding area. The site also includes an orchard experience area with fruit trees of old varieties and information about them. For observing the landscape, the elevated view and the theme of old fruit varieties can be combined as the focus of a visit.

A church with many layers of history

The Sint-Pancratius Church in Mesch is one of the oldest stone churches in the Netherlands and is protected as a Rijksmonument, a listed national monument. Parts of its nave date from the 9th century. The Late Gothic choir was built around 1400 from marlstone. At the same time, the Sint-Pancratius Church continues to serve as a parish church. The church thus brings together a nave dating partly from the 9th century and a later Late Gothic choir made of marlstone.

Hiking, pausing and regional trails

The Bloesemroute Mesch begins in Mesch and follows hiking junctions towards the Belgian Voer region. It is one of 11 Camini routes and offers a short pilgrimage experience with sayings and tasks for reflection and awareness. Mesch is also part of the European Liberation Route. The long-distance Pelgrimspad trail also passes through Mesch. For planning a day out, the short Bloesemroute with its reflection activities and the Pelgrimspad, which passes through Mesch as a long-distance trail, suit different timeframes.

Cycling through the Voer region

On the “Dwars door de Voerstreek Eijsden-Margraten” route, you can park your car on Langstraat in Mesch and then follow the cycle junctions. The route can also be ridden by e-bike; e-bikes can be rented in the region. The parking option on Langstraat gives the route a fixed starting point. Regional e-bike rental also makes it possible to plan the tour without your own e-bike. This cycle route therefore combines a specific starting location with the choice of using your own or a rented e-bike.

Farmstead and regional products

Hoeve de Laethof, a large carré farmstead dating from 1721, is part of the local character. Local products are offered there, including meat, fish and plant-based products. At Hoeve de Laethof, you can also charge your e-bike safely behind the gate. During a cycling tour, the charging facility behind the gate can be included in the day’s planning. The farmstead’s offerings therefore include local products as well as safe e-bike charging behind the gate.
