Rasquert is a wierde village built on a residential mound raised by people to protect against flooding. Particularly impressive is its well-preserved medieval structure: the street plan resembles a wheel, with roads radiating like spokes towards the highest point of the wierde. The remaining landscape also recalls the history of the village, after around half of the wierde was excavated at the beginning of the 20th century.

Wierde history on short and long routes

A hiking trail follows the course of Rasquert’s old ring road around the wierde. The Toalroute is approximately 5 km long, starts at the Dorpshuis in Baflo and passes through Rasquert. At several points, it uses signs featuring poems in Gronings, known as Grunnegers. In this way, the route connects with a linguistic feature of the region, while allowing visitors to experience the village’s historic character up close.

The Baflo–Rasquert area is connected to numerous hiking and cycling routes. For longer excursions, these include the 4 km hiking route “In de voetsporen van Agricola”, with a stop at the wierde village of Rasquert, as well as the 21 km Maarhuizen–Baflo–Tinallinge route. The “Foodwalk Tussen Den Andel en Warffum” is a 6.6 km recreational walking route; the “Valeriaan” station is part of this route. The different route lengths help you compare short village explorations and longer hiking days to suit your travel plans.

Historic farmsteads and distinctive village scenery

The notable farmsteads include ’t Olhof, a small relic that survived on an island when the wierde was excavated. Asinga is a farmstead of the Hoekplaats type; its barn façade is well preserved and dated. Almaheerdt belongs to the Kop-Hals-Romp type.

The former mayor’s villa from 1868 stands at Meijmaweg 2. Its garden features a landscape design that probably dates from around 1926. The Meyma complex consists of a villa farmstead and an ornamental garden, which are connected with the adjacent villa at Meijmaweg 2. The complex lies on the edge of the village of Rasquert’s wierde, probably on the site of a former borg.

The village’s history can also be encountered at Meijemaweg 21: the former inn and the former grocery shop date from 1864. Today, the listed building is used as a residence. Rasquert never had its own church; its residents attended church in nearby Baflo. This connection explains another historical link between the two villages.
