Baflo reveals its character in the distinctive form of a wierde: the streets run like spokes towards the highest point. This structure is complemented by a church, memorial sites and trails for walks and bike rides. The wierde shapes the layout of the roads through Baflo; the church, memorial sites, and walking and cycling routes are all part of this village landscape.

Rudolf Agricola, whose real name was Roelof Huesman, was born in Baflo in 1443 and was one of the most important early humanist scholars of the Northern Netherlands. The Standbeeld Rudolf Agricola commemorates the versatile Northern Netherlander Rudolf Agricola. At Proef Lokaal Bakkerij Rutgers, you can enjoy coffee or tea with Agricolakoek.

Walks and cycling routes in Baflo

For a walk through Baflo, the Grunneger Taalroute offers the opportunity to discover poems. The Toalroute is a circular route of approximately 5 kilometres: it starts at the Dorpshuis in Baflo, crosses the Hochhoutje, a high footbridge, and returns to the starting point. In Baflo, you can also choose the longer “Hoog en droog op de wierde” route.

Along the Baflo-Winsum walking route, this section runs mostly along a wide cycle path. The Noorderrondritten are particularly suitable for road cyclists, e-bikes and multi-day cycling tours, and can be cycled all year round. In Baflo, the Toalroute, “Hoog en droog op de wierde” and the Noorderrondritten represent a circular route, a longer route and cycling tours.

Buildings with a history of their own

Several specific buildings add to the village landscape. Nieuw Blokken is a rentier's house built in 1929/30 with an attached garage in Baflo, designed by the architect W. Reitsema. It was built in a regional variant of the Amsterdam School style. The house at Rudolf Agricolastraat 2 is a rentier's house built around 1880 and was converted into a shop-house in 1923 by L. Bakker & Zoon.

Baflo railway station opened on 16 August 1893 on the Sauwerd–Roodeschool railway line. The station building was the only station building on the line to Roodeschool to survive and was designated a municipal monument in 2019. Thus, in Baflo, alongside the wierde and trails, you will also encounter tangible evidence of its architectural and transport history.
