Stadskanaal: Waterways, Railways and Architectural Heritage
Accommodation in Stadskanaal
Waterways, railway history and distinctive buildings offer different perspectives on Stadskanaal. There is also the opportunity to watch birds. Which of these themes you want to shape your stay is a helpful question to consider before choosing a holiday apartment and the right starting point.

Waterways and locks
The Stadskanaal is part of the Veendam–Stadskanaal–Ter Apel waterway. To the south, it connects to the German Haren-Rütenbrock Canal at the German border. The Stadskanaal has five locks, also known locally as “verlaten.” This brings together the larger waterway connection and the specific structures along the canal in one theme. If you are planning a trip on the water, check the navigation conditions in advance.
Railway history and architectural heritage
At Stadskanaal station, the Museumspoorlijn STAR museum has an extensive exhibition on the history of the railway line. Museumspoorlijn STAR is the longest heritage railway in the Netherlands, runs along the border between Groningen and Drenthe, and offers a historic train journey. The exhibition and train journey each have a different focus: one explores the history of the line, while the other brings the historic railway to life.
The architectural heritage also offers specific details. The Watertoren Stadskanaal was built in 1935 in the Amsterdam School style and is 42.67 metres high. At Julianapark, by contrast, the focus is on the design of a landscaped park and its features: it is a Dutch Rijksmonument and was laid out in the English landscape style in the 1930s. Curving paths and an irregularly shaped pond define the park. The two themes are therefore quite distinct: one is a building with a precise height and style, the other a park design that can be described in terms of its paths and pond.
Birdwatching as a different focus
There is a birdwatching hut in the Veenhuizerstukken in Stadskanaal. From there, you can observe spoonbills, garganeys, pochards and northern shovelers. The specific species listed give nature lovers a clear indication of what to look out for. Birdwatching and railway history therefore appeal to very different interests, which you can take into account when planning your stay.
Choosing the right starting point
When looking for a holiday apartment in Stadskanaal, you can first consider what you want to focus on: waterways and locks, Museumspoorlijn STAR, architecture or birdwatching. If you are travelling with family, you can make the choice together based on these specific themes—for example, whether a historic train journey, an exhibition or the bird species mentioned particularly spark your curiosity. This lets you make a choice based on your interests, without giving every stay the same focus.
Theater Geert Teis is a specific point of reference for a central location: it is in the centre of Stadskanaal. Right next to it, at Geert Teisplein, there is a large free car park with enough spaces for people with disabilities. If the theatre is part of your plans, you can use its central location as a guide when choosing your holiday apartment. The parking information is also relevant for getting there.
