Holiday apartment in Alteveer – canal village with history

Alteveer combines waterways with a multifaceted local history. The canal village and late peat colony developed from the end of the 19th century onwards on the border of the municipalities of Stadskanaal, formerly Onstwedde, and Pekela. Between the canal, village houses, churches and places of remembrance, you will find a place where regional history takes concrete form.

Waterways and village character

South of Alteveer, the Alteveerkanaal makes a bayonet-shaped bend before flowing into the Stadskanaal. It was constructed and connected to the Boerendiep, the canal running parallel to the Stadskanaal, to regulate the removal of peat. The Poortmanswijk, where a lock was located, connected Alteveer with the Pekelderdiep. The central section of the canal was filled in, meaning that the lifting bridge on the Beumeesweg could be removed.

A distinctive silo shapes the silhouette of the village of Alteveer. Strikingly low workers’ houses with Krimp stand at Beumeesweg 34, 42, 44, 70 and 166. The buildings reflect two important phases of development: the period around 1900 and the period shortly after the war.

Church and places of remembrance

The first church building in Alteveer was erected in 1902. The present church in Tange-Alteveer was built in 1961. The liberation monument stands in the General Cemetery behind the N.H. church on Beumesweg in Alteveer, in the municipality of Stadskanaal. In the form of a concrete column, it commemorates the liberation of Tange-Alteveer on 13 April 1945.

The Oldambtster farmhouse at Barkelazwet 6 was probably built in 1937 and is of general interest because of its cultural and architectural-historical significance. After its last occupant died in 1941, a sod hut was transferred to the Open-Air Museum in Arnhem. Farmers founded the Coöperatieve Aardappelzetmeelfabriek Alteveer in 1911.

Local history and activities

An informative historical walking tour has been created around the local history of Alteveer. The historical QR code project includes 12 locations in Alteveer. The twelve stations draw attention to different aspects of local history, from the waterways to the places of remembrance. In summer, the IJsvereniging “De Toekomst” offers inline skating on its track in Alteveer; children can take part in inline skating there under supervision on Monday evenings from 18:30 to 19:30 starting on 11 May. The regular Monday evening time can be taken into account when planning a summer day in Alteveer.
