Midwolda offers three different ways to enjoy a holiday: the historic Ennemaborg estate, nature in Midwolderbos and water sports on Oldambtmeer. The range extends from cultural history and wildlife and birdwatching to activities on the water. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Midwolda, your preferred focus may help you decide: would you mainly like to discover a historic estate, experience wildlife and the landscape, or set aside time for water sports?

Ennemaborg: fortified stone house and baroque park

Ennemaborg was built around 1391 as a medieval fortified stone house. The estate includes a park laid out largely in the 18th-century baroque style. The contrast between the medieval fortification and the baroque park design offers two historical perspectives on the same estate. Visitors are free to walk on the estate’s paths and trails. As local access conditions may change, check them before your visit.

Midwolderbos: woodland, bodies of water and Konik horses

Midwolderbos is in Midwolda, behind Ennemaborg. The old woodland was once used for timber production and is now a piece of Groningen nature. There are several bodies of water in the southeastern part, where various bird species settle. Visitors can also walk among Konik horses in the woodland. The bodies of water provide a focal point for birdwatching, while the Konik horses offer a different wildlife highlight. At the same time, the woodland’s former use for timber gives today’s natural setting a historical background.

Water sports and swimming at Oldambtmeer

Oldambtmeer was created specifically for water sports. It is part of the Blauwestad residential and recreational project and lies in the former peatland between Midwolda, Oostwold and Winschoten. Two perspectives therefore come together when planning a trip: Blauwestad’s recreational character and the lake’s explicitly water-sports-oriented use. Jachthaven Midwolda, with more than 200 berths for boats, is on the northern shore of Oldambtmeer. If a berth is part of your travel plans, check availability in advance.

Zeilschool Blauwestad is located at Jachthaven Midwolda on Oldambtmeer. Visitors can learn to sail or windsurf there. Lessons may vary by season and may require an appointment, so check dates in advance.

At Noord Beach, the swimming water is carefully monitored and maintained by Waterschap Hunze & Aa's. Check the current conditions before swimming. The terrace of the pavilion at Noord Beach offers views of the marina and the water. You can pursue different interests at Oldambtmeer: sailing or windsurfing lessons, swimming, or taking in the view from the pavilion terrace.

Historical milestones and a route connection

Boerderij Hermans Dijkstra in Midwolda dates from 1858. Together with Ennemaborg, built around 1391, it creates a clear contrast in time: a medieval fortified stone house and a farm from the 19th century. Stage 8 of the Beleefroute de Graanrepubliek also passes through Midwolda. The route section provides a different context for choosing the area than visiting individual historic or natural sites.
