Oldambtmeer and Nature Area
The Blauwestad project included the creation of a new lake covering more than 800 hectares: Oldambtmeer. The landscape therefore includes both this large expanse of water and existing nature areas. Another named natural area is Reiderwolde, a 200-hectare area on Oldambtmeer. The different sizes give you a tangible sense of the surroundings, without reducing nature and water to a single place to visit.
Reiderwolde has cycling, walking and horse-riding trails. This lets you plan your stay around your preferred way of getting around: on foot, by bike or on horseback. If you want to focus on these trails, you can consider Reiderwolde as a specific point of reference when choosing where to stay.
Activities on the Water and Trails to Winschoten
DEK Blauwestad offers kayak rentals on Oldambtmeer. Check the latest rental information before your trip. Oldambtmeer and the surrounding waterways are also considered attractive fishing spots; check the local rules before fishing. Kayaking and fishing therefore offer different ways to enjoy a stay by the water.
The Pieter Smitbrug connects Winschoten directly to Blauwestad and is intended for cyclists and pedestrians. It is almost 800 metres long. If you’d like to include both places in your stay, this direct connection is a practical consideration when choosing where to stay. The permanent marathon routes start at the blue viewing platform in the Havenkwartier at Redersplein in Blauwestad.
Landscape Art and Event Venues
Triadeem, near Strand Zuid, is a play and activity area made of boulders and also a landscape artwork by Derk den Boer. The play area and artwork are part of the same design: the boulders give the place a distinctive appearance and provide the landscape artwork with its characteristic material.
Wilgenborg is a living Land Art artwork on the edge of Oldambtmeer and a landmark known as the “green cathedral”. It can host larger and smaller events, theatre, storytelling and music. Elfenbank is a gathering area that is occasionally used as an event venue.
The event site near Strand Zuid on the southern side of Oldambtmeer is also suitable for events such as concerts and temporary campsites. In Reiderwolde, the theatre can be used for performances, excursions and lessons; use is by arrangement. Pontje van Henk connects Reiderwolde with the De Tjamme nature area near Beerta. Check the latest operating information for the ferry before your trip.
Choosing the Right Focus for Your Stay
When choosing a holiday rental, consider what you want your days to revolve around: water activities on Oldambtmeer, trails in Reiderwolde or the direct connection to Winschoten offer different starting points for planning. Art venues and potential cultural events provide another focus. Tailor your search to what matters most for your stay.
