Delfzijl combines a maritime location with an unusually large number of traces of history and everyday life. The town lies between the Dollard and the Wadden Sea. From Delfzijl town centre, a walk via the Diekloper leads to a large beach. At Delfzijl Beach, you can swim in the Dollard and build sandcastles. If you are planning a holiday apartment in Delfzijl, you can combine exploring the town and enjoying the water during one stay.

Holiday apartment in Delfzijl for water, cycling and culture

You can also plan active days in a very practical way. The passenger ship “Dollard” is the centrepiece of a cross-border cycling tour. The ferry connection makes it possible to cross the bay by bicycle. From Delfzijl, you can take a boat onto the Dollard, which is described there as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. When planning your accommodation, you can therefore shape your stay around walks, the beach, cycling and boating.

Museums featuring the sea and everyday history

The MuzeeAquarium combines a natural history and cultural history collection with an aquarium showing fish and other marine animals from the Wadden Sea and the North Sea. The natural history presentation covers rocks, minerals, soil structure and fossils. The marine aquarium is housed in an original Second World War ammunition bunker. ’t Hoeske van opoe Iet presents its collection in seven rooms arranged around different themes. The small museum house displays everyday objects used by earlier generations between 1735 and 1940/50. On other days, a visit to ’t Hoeske van opoe Iet is available by appointment.

Culture and historic sites in Delfzijl

More than 100 performances are on the programme at De Molenberg Theatre each year, including professional, amateur and school performances; film screenings are also held there. The Steenfabriek Fivelmonde was founded in 1862. It is still completely preserved, but production has ceased. Today, it serves as a centre for cultural, educational and tourist activities. Traces of urban history and architecture

The Kleine Waterpoort is also known as the De Ruyterpoort because the fleet of the Dutch West India Company came ashore in Delfzijl in 1665 thanks to Michiel de Ruyter. If water levels threaten to rise, the Kleine Waterpoort can be closed by hand. A large part of the neighbourhood was built at the beginning of the 20th century in the Amsterdam School style. The “Delfzijl Pocket” route leads to monuments, bunkers and other surviving traces of the heavy fighting.

Special dates and other places
