Discover Westernieland: Holiday Rental, Village History and Nature
Accommodation in Westernieland
Westernieland between Village History and Nature
Westernieland is a late-medieval dispersed settlement. Your exploration of the village therefore begins with a distinctive settlement pattern that cannot be reduced to a single attraction. The scattered buildings shape the start of the walk. The range of options extends from a short walk through the built-up village area to castles and a bird park in the surrounding area, as well as a beach and islands in the wider region.

Walking Routes and Cycle Rides
The short village walk through Westernieland remains within the built-up village area. Along the way, it passes through a landscape with changes in elevation, remnants of dikes and kolks. These kolks were formed by the Christmas Flood of 1717 and make the landscape a visible part of the village’s history at the same time. For longer outings around Westernieland, there are walking and cycling routes lasting approximately 30 minutes to 3 hours. With the longer option, there is more time to experience the changes in elevation, remnants of dikes and kolks along the way. Different time frames make it easier for you to plan varied days when the interests or stamina of different members of a travel group need to be taken into account.
History, Church and Cemetery
The Christmas Flood of 1717 had a profound impact on Westernieland: the village was almost completely destroyed, but the church survived. Some gravestones in the cemetery bear witness to former hunters in Westernieland. Visitors interested in culture can combine the historic section with the church and cemetery. Together with the late-medieval structure of the dispersed settlement, this provides a tangible connection to the past that can be combined during a stay with the village scenery and a walk.
Herbs, Tea and an Old House
Kristin's Kruiderij offers a special cultural and culinary aspect. Practical workshops and talks on herbs and natural skincare are held there. Kristin's Kruiderij is located in one of the oldest houses in Westernieland. The herbs used there are also made into aromatic tea.
Castles in the Surrounding Area
Breedenborg, a castle, lies close to Westernieland. The castles of Mattenesse, Verhildersum and Panser are also located in the surrounding area. Breedenborg is in the immediate vicinity, while the other three castles are in the wider surrounding area. These four historic sites expand the choice of cultural and historical destinations without leaving Westernieland itself behind: the starting point remains the village, with its own history and characteristic dispersed settlement pattern.
Wadden Sea, Islands and Birdlife
Oosterstrand, a beach, lies in the wider region around Westernieland. The islands of Zuiderduintjes and Rottumerplaat are also located in this wider regional area. The “Wiededorpen en waddenkust” route also runs near Westernieland towards the Wadden Sea, a unique natural area teeming with life. The route to the Wadden Sea provides an additional geographical framework alongside the village walk. When choosing accommodation in Westernieland, this creates an interesting range of options between a village stroll, regional history and landscapes connected with the coast and islands.
