Holiday apartment in Mensingeweer: discover the Pieterpad, organ and mill
Accommodation in Mensingeweer
Mensingeweer originally developed as a small medieval terp village. The church stands on the terp and defines the character of the village. The Mensingeweerster Loopdiep was part of the provincial towing canal from Winsum to Ulrum, constructed in 1663. The terp church and the Loopdiep therefore belong to two different historical features of the village. The village’s origins as a terp settlement and the former use of the Loopdiep as a towing canal belong to different historical layers of the same place.

Pieterpad and Molenweg
The Pieterpad runs through Mensingeweer via the Molenweg. This section of the route passes through the village and gives the walk a specific connection with the Molenweg. Those following the Pieterpad through Mensingeweer encounter a clearly defined stretch of the Molenweg within the village landscape. At the Hollands Welvaart mill, there is a coffee and tea room serving local pastries. Exhibitions are held there regularly. Visitors can grind flour themselves using a hand quern. A break at the Hollands Welvaart mill can therefore be combined with local pastries, an exhibition or grinding with the hand quern. In addition to coffee, tea and pastries, exhibitions and hands-on milling are thus among the specific activities at the mill. The route and the mill location consequently represent two different ways of being on the move: walking, and spending time there with exhibitions and traditional crafts.
Organ history and music
The Arp Schnitger organ is located in Mensingeweer. It was built in 1698 for the church in Pieterburen and installed in Mensingeweer in 1901. By prior arrangement, the organ can be played through Stichting Hinszorgel Leens. Prior coordination is part of this visit when the organ is played. For those interested in culture, the historic instrument is complemented by the option of an arranged organ performance.
Castles and bird park in the surrounding area
Mattenesse and Verhildersum are located in the immediate vicinity of Mensingeweer; both are castles. Breedenborg and Panser are also in the surrounding area and are likewise castles. The bird park is a park in the area around Mensingeweer. Mattenesse and Verhildersum are geographically closer than Breedenborg and Panser. The four castles remain separate destinations from the bird park, which, as a park, offers a different focus in the surrounding area. Those interested in culture will therefore find four castles with distinct names in the area, as well as the bird park as a park.
Beaches in the wider regional area
The wider regional area around Mensingeweer includes three beaches: Oosterstrand, Het Rif and Westerstrand. They belong to the more broadly defined regional area and are therefore outside the narrower description of the village and its immediate surroundings. Those wishing to add coastal destinations to their stay can note Oosterstrand, Het Rif and Westerstrand as additional regional destinations. The three beach destinations therefore do not represent the centre of Mensingeweer, but destinations in the wider regional area.
