Holiday apartment in Randwijk – Floodplains, hiking trails and history

Randwijk combines the landscape along the Nederrijn with water-based activities, opportunities for observation and historical traces. A clear focus is on hiking: the Rondje Randwijk is a 4.7-kilometre hiking trail. The circular route is therefore a walk in its own right, alongside the town’s other natural and cultural attractions.

In the Randwijkse Buitenpolder, you can hike, swim, fish and go boating. The polder landscape features a beach, hiking trails and a marina for passing boats. There is also a fishing jetty, a steel birdwatching station and a picnic area. The beach, marina, fishing jetty and picnic area complement the paths and water activities with specific points of interest in the polder landscape. This makes it possible to combine different interests in one landscape: active walks, time by the water, observations in the floodplains and a break at the picnic area.

The Veerweg and the Randwijkse Rijndijk are good places for birdwatching. With binoculars, they offer good opportunities to observe meadow birds and overwintering migratory birds in the floodplains.

Hiking between the river landscape and the ridges

The area around Randwijk and Heteren along the Nederrijn is characterised by orchards, tree nurseries and brickworks. While hiking, the floodplains, river course and ridges meet there as distinct landscape elements. There are also views of ridges that formed during the penultimate Ice Age. Another striking landscape feature is the Laaksloot: in the floodplains next to Randwijk, an old river course from Roman times can be recognised as a ditch lined with pollard willows. The Romans and Batavians used the remains of this old river course as a natural harbour.

Historical sites in Randwijk

The Hervormde Kerk in Randwijk is a Rijksmonument, a listed national heritage site, and is mentioned in documents dating from 1395. As a building, it is a single-nave village church with a late-Gothic chancel closed on three sides. De Nijburg (Nyenborch) was a castle dating from the 14th century in Randwijk/Heteren.

At the site where De Nijburg Castle once stood, an additional 0.4-kilometre walk is recommended. A partly paved footpath runs below the castle moat and above the castle rampart. At 4.7 kilometres, the Rondje Randwijk is longer than the additional 0.4-kilometre walk at the former castle site. This allows you to distinguish between the 4.7-kilometre Rondje Randwijk and this shorter additional walk when planning your route.

The history of brickmaking at the Gelders Smalspoor Museum

At the Gelders Smalspoor Museum, the history of the Dutch brick industry is presented through guided tours. The museum also offers rides on a narrow-gauge railway along a reconstructed route through a nature-rich floodplain area. Clay was once extracted in this area. The combination of the museum, railway route and floodplain landscape complements Randwijk’s natural and historical themes.
