Holiday apartment in Ammerzoden: castle, history and excursions

Ammerzoden combines a late-medieval castle complex, a church standing freely in the countryside, and trails through the surrounding area. Ammersoyen Castle: castle complex with gardens and moat

Ammersoyen Castle is a medieval castle with four towers. The complex also includes an imposing Great Hall six metres high, an outer bailey, and moats.

It is a late-medieval castle complex surrounded by two moats. The main castle is square in layout and has round corner towers. The outer bailey is approximately square; an extension is located on one side.

The grounds also include two medieval gardens that complement the castle area with historic outdoor spaces. The round corner towers and the square layouts of the main castle and outer bailey give the complex a clearly structured geometry.

The Maas meander and the Meersloot

Ammerzoden is enclosed to the north by a largely silted-up meander of the Maas. Ammersoyen Castle is located on the western side of this former Maas meander. The Meersloot is a remnant of the former Maas meander and supplies the castle's moat with water. As a result, the castle's moat has a direct connection to the former Maas meander.

Ruïnekerk: church among the trees

The Ruïnekerk stands freely in the countryside and is surrounded by tall trees. Because of its elevated position, it served as a refuge for people and animals during floods. The entire church building was completed around 1547; the bell was hung in the tower in the same year. A church made of large bricks was built in the 13th century. Several centuries lie between the 13th-century construction and the completion of the entire church building around 1547.

Hiking trails and excursions

The Baanbrekerpad leads through the surrounding areas of Ammerzoden and Well and also past Ammersoyen Castle.

“Stappen door de historie van Ammersoyen” is a 9-kilometre excursion divided into two hiking stages and includes a visit to Ammersoyen Castle. For day planning, the 9 kilometres of this excursion can be considered as two sections.

The two options differ clearly in terms of day planning and the type of route desired: the Baanbrekerpad leads through the surrounding areas of Ammerzoden and Well and past Ammersoyen Castle, while “Stappen door de historie van Ammersoyen” specifies a fixed length of 9 kilometres and two clearly separate hiking stages.

Visitors can explore Ammersoyen Castle at their own leisure, move freely around the castle, and climb every staircase. Hoppies in Ammerzoden has a barefoot trail; there is also a mini-golf course there.

Those arriving by car will find free parking at Ammersoyen Castle. The castle car park also has a charging station for electric cars. During events, the parking fees applicable to the respective event apply.
