Geldermalsen: History and Townscape

The Geldermalsen station complex consists of three protected components. The present Geldermalsen station building – Geldermalsen II – was built in 1886 as an island platform station, predominantly designed in the Neo-Renaissance style. The station complex lies west of the village and south of the Linge. This location brings together a clearly dated building, the distinctive form of an island platform station and a setting within the river landscape. The station complex therefore forms a separate historical point of reference on the edge of the town.

The Centrum Church, also known as the Suitbertus Church, in Geldermalsen likewise reaches far back into the history of the town. It includes a tuff-stone church built in the 12th century and dedicated to Saint Suitbertus. A tower was added a century later. The Sint Martinus bell was hung in the church in 1460; it also contains a 15th-century baptismal font. The chronology therefore extends from the 12th-century tuff-stone church and the 13th-century tower to the bell and baptismal font from the 15th century.

At Marktplein in Geldermalsen, the Beurs is one of the defining buildings. It was built when trade in Geldermalsen became increasingly extensive towards the end of the 19th century. The development of trade is connected with the town’s history through this building, complementing the religious and railway-related aspects of the town.

Cycling Along the Linge

The Betuwe Fruit Route begins at junction 59 at the intersection of Herman Kuijkstraat and Rijksstraatweg in Geldermalsen. It follows winding roads and dikes along the Linge and ends in Geldermalsen. The town is therefore both the starting and finishing point of the route, while the route incorporates the Linge and the dikes. Free parking for the Betuwe Fruit Route is available at Kostverlorenkade or at Geldermalsen NS railway station. You can take these two parking options into account when planning the start of your route.

Regional Products in Geldermalsen

De Streekzaak is a cosy lunch café and shop focused entirely on regional products from the Betuwe. As both a lunch café and a shop, it combines a meal with a range of regional goods. The Betuwe, as the region of origin, is at the centre of its offering. This culinary connection adds another specific location in Geldermalsen to the buildings at the station and Marktplein and the route along the Linge.

A Holiday Apartment in Geldermalsen for Different Holiday Ideas

When planning a holiday apartment or holiday home in Geldermalsen, you can first decide which focus should define your stay. The historic buildings offer opportunities to consider the development of the town over several centuries. The Linge and the Betuwe Fruit Route represent cycling-focused trip planning, while the Beurs and De Streekzaak place trade and regional products at the centre. This allows local history, outdoor activity and culinary discoveries to be considered as different interests.

This breadth of themes is particularly helpful for orientation when several people have their own holiday ideas. You can consider the chronological sequence at the Centrum Church, also known as the Suitbertus Church, classify the station complex as a railway-history point of reference, or connect Marktplein and the Beurs with the town’s history of trade. The route along the Linge also remains an independent focus. This means you can choose a holiday apartment or holiday home in Geldermalsen according to the desired character of your trip, without limiting your stay to just one attraction.

You can discover other places to include in your trip planning via Meteren, Beesd and Deil.
