Discover Wichmond: Village history and rural paths

Wichmond is situated in a rural landscape with farms, pastures, fields, and country estates. The earliest known mention of Wichmond, under the name Withmundi, dates from 794. The church's history also goes back a long way. The Protestant congregation in Wichmond is the continuation of the first church congregation established by Saint Ludger on the IJssel in Wichmond.

Church and vicarage on Dorpsstraat

The former vicarage at Dorpsstraat 18 in Wichmond and the present-day Protestant church were built in 1855 for the Dutch Reformed congregation of the time. At Dorpsstraat 16, the Hervormde Kerk is protected as a Rijksmonument because of its single-manual organ, made by H. Knipscheer in Amsterdam in 1867. The Protestant church on Dorpsstraat is one of the oldest buildings in present-day Wichmond. The different construction dates place the vicarage, church, and organ in different historical periods of origin.

Hiking through the Achterhoek landscape

The 93-kilometre long-distance hiking trail Ludgerpad passes through Wichmond. It is divided into stages that can also be hiked as individual day walks. From Wichmond, the Ludgerpad leads towards Hengelo through the rural surroundings with pastures, farms, and unpaved paths. The stage structure changes the timeframe of the long-distance trail: a single stage can be planned as an independent day of hiking, while several stages form a longer sequence. The landscape remains characterised by agricultural areas and sections of unpaved paths.

Another option is the Ockhorstroute. It runs around Wichmond and Vierakker through the typical Achterhoek bocage landscape, along paths on country estates and farms, and over a restored church path. Brown signs with a white flying goose serve as markers. As a loop, it differs in its route form from the Ludgerpad, which is divided into stages. For day planning, this means that a loop trail must be distinguished from a selected section of the long-distance trail. The route connects country-estate paths, farms, and the restored church path within the landscape between Wichmond and Vierakker.

Cycling and culture at a daily pace

From Wichmond, cyclists can use the Dutch cycle-node network. This adds a cycling route to the two different forms of hiking. For planning active days, the types of routes can be clearly distinguished: the Ludgerpad is a long-distance hiking trail with individual stages, the Ockhorstroute is a loop through Wichmond and Vierakker, while the cycle-node network provides the framework for cycling tours. The historical orientation remains on Dorpsstraat with its church and vicarage, while the paths lead through pastures, farms, fields, and country estates into the rural landscape. This gives visitors to Wichmond several specific options for a day out: a section of the Ludgerpad, the Ockhorstroute, or a ride on the Dutch cycle-node network. In addition, Dorpsstraat 16 with the Hervormde Kerk and its organ, as well as the former vicarage at number 18, are historic addresses in the village.
