Holiday apartment in Steenderen: Churches, Trails and the IJssel Landscape

Steenderen is located in the municipality of Bronckhorst on the eastern side of the IJssel. The open landscape with meadows and arable fields gives the town a rural setting; churches, historic trails and memorial sites add specific destinations for your trip to this picture. In the town and its open surroundings, there are various places to visit for culture and outdoor activities.

Churches and Historical Traces

The present-day Remigius Church was built in the 15th century. Since 1966, it has been one of the Rijksmonumenten, the Dutch state-protected monuments. The Sint Willibrordus Church dates from a different period: it was built between 1862 and 1864. The two churches therefore represent distinctly different periods of construction within the town's history.

The Spijker is also one of the historic traces. It is a heavily altered relic of the former Oud Spaensweert Castle. Remains of the former dry moat are visible around it. The Spijker cannot be visited from the inside, but it can be seen from the public road. The visit is therefore limited to viewing the exterior, while the visible moat remains are also part of its surroundings. The Plantenbos is located on the Landlustweg in Steenderen. Part of today's Plantenbos originally belonged to Huize Landlust and was laid out in 1827 by Evert Godevrid Planten.

The Steenderen war memorial consists of a steel cross and two boulders, each bearing a commemorative plaque. It commemorates three residents who lost their lives during the Second World War or the Indonesian War of Decolonization. The paved pavilion is located between Toldijkseweg 1 and Burgemeester Smitstraat 2. Its form, location and dedication make the memorial site easy to identify within the townscape.

Trails through the Town and Landscape

Two trails of different lengths are central to exploring the area on foot. The Tegelroute Steenderen is a historic hiking trail approximately 3.2 kilometres long, with seventeen granite photo panels. It is suitable for wheelchair users and people with walking frames. It is therefore the shorter of the two routes described and combines its historic character with a series of seventeen illustrated stations.

The approximately 5.5-kilometre Oltmansroute runs from Steenderen through the open IJssel landscape, passing the Bronkhorster Molen, the Vreekolk and the Molenkolk. It also passes three restored old orchards in ’t Paradijs, where standard trees with old and forgotten apple and pear varieties grow. Its stations therefore range from the open landscape and bodies of water to the distinctive orchards with historic varieties.

For cycling and day trips, places including Bronkhorst, the IJssel and surrounding villages can be reached from Steenderen via numbered-node routes and country roads. The area described thus encompasses both the river landscape and other towns and villages outside the immediate town centre.
