Ruurlo Castle, Art and Historical Discoveries

Museum MORE Ruurlo is located in Ruurlo Castle and focuses on the life and work of the Dutch realist artist Carel Willink. Museum MORE Ruurlo also presents changing exhibitions of contemporary art. This means that during a visit, both the castle’s architecture and the art take center stage. The historic grounds include a hedge maze in the western section, created in 1885 for Sophia Wilhelmina van Heeckeren van Kell. The Sint Willibrordus Church was designed by Pierre Cuypers and built from 1869 to 1871.

The Agneta also tells a story of technical and craft history. The mill was built in 1851 as a hulling, oil and grain mill and was converted into a sawmill and grain mill in 1917. Today, the Agneta has an installation that generates electricity for demonstration purposes. Another experience is Doolhof Ruurlo: it covers just under one hectare and has 1,188 meters of paths.

Hiking Trails Through Water, Forest and Fields

The Kasteelwandeling in Ruurlo is 5.40 kilometers long, starts at TOP De Heikamp at Hengeloseweg 2 in Ruurlo and crosses the Baakse Beek several times. The Liefdespad runs through Ruurlo for more than 5 kilometers. At various points along the Liefdespad in Ruurlo, artistic loveseats express water, nature, technology, rural life and diversity.

The Boswachterspad Laarzenroute Ruurlo provides a particularly vivid experience of nature and the landscape. The trail leads through grassland, heathland, forests and agricultural land, as well as along a boardwalk. It starts at the De Heikamp pancake farm. The Het-Zandroute leads from Zelhem through the wooded area of the 't Zand estate towards Ruurlo and runs along avenues and forest paths.

Experiences for Various Interests

Klimbos Ruurlo has nine climbing courses, including three junior and six regular courses, reaching heights of up to 20 meters. A visit begins with 30 minutes of instruction, after which visitors climb independently.
