Holiday apartment in Nederbiel – landscape, castles and trails

Nederbiel is a special, perhaps rather unknown and appealing area. Its landscape ranges from the Eschflur open fields through agricultural development to the stream valley. There is also a havezate, castles, parks, as well as cycling and church paths. The transition from the open fields to the valley connects the impression of the landscape with the historic farm complexes and castles around Nederbiel.

Along the Needse Tolweg, there is a tangible transition from the Eschflur open fields through agricultural development to the stream valley. The open fields come first, the area shaped by agriculture lies in between, and at the end comes the valley along the stream. The impression of the landscape gradually shifts from the open area to the valley.

Havezate Mensink and the late Middle Ages

The havezate Mensink is part of the area’s cultural history. In 1378, it was located in the hamlet of Nederbiel, and the estate is surrounded by a moat. In the late Middle Ages, the owners of Mensink belonged to the knighthood of Borculo.

Lubberdink and rural architecture

Another farm complex is Lubberdink, a hall-house farm complex with a T-shaped floor plan. It includes an attached barn, a detached auxiliary barn and a servant’s house. The Lubberdink farm ensemble at Needse Tolweg 13 in Geesteren is designated as a municipal monument. It is also known as “Dave”.

Local references along the Needse Tolweg

In Nederbiel, the Needse Tolweg refers to the landscape section between the Eschflur open fields and the stream valley, as well as to part of the cycling route. The Lubberdink farm ensemble at Needse Tolweg 13, however, is located in Geesteren.

Castles and parks in the surrounding area

The castles De Cloese, Huize't Medler, Marhulsen and Huize Onstein are located around Nederbiel. The nearby area also includes the parks Het Galgenveld, Waterster and Drosten Kamp. Mallemsche Esch is another park in the vicinity of Nederbiel.

Cycling route with a clear distance

The cycling route “Route 6. Haarlo, Borculo en Geesteren” was approximately 30 km long in February 2013 and ran via the Needse Tolweg and then via the Nederbielspad. A cycling stage of approximately 30 km can therefore be planned as an independent part of a day’s itinerary.

Church path for the residents of the hamlet of Nederbiel

The “Kempers' Wandelrondje Kerkenpaden Geesteren” includes a church path for the residents of the hamlet of Nederbiel. The church path is a different type of route from the cycling route. For planning the day, the cycling route and church path can therefore be considered separately.
