Holiday apartment in Loenen: heathland, waterfall and culture

Loenen combines a historic cultural landscape with woodland, heathland and water. The Loenense Enk is a historic esdorp landscape with rolling fields, flower-rich farmland and semi-open woodland. The Loenermark combines extensive forests and rolling heathland with red deer, fallow deer, roe deer and wild boar. The Enk therefore represents the landscape shaped by fields and farmland, while the Loenermark represents woodland and heathland.

Nature, heathland and wildlife watching

The wildlife observation post on the Loenermark is freely accessible and wheelchair-friendly. From the car park on Groenendaalseweg, you can reach it via a paved path. From April to December, the Loenermark sheep flock moves onto the heathland with its shepherd. Those planning to observe nature can choose the Loenermark, with its woodland, heathland and wildlife, as a specific focus of their visit.

Rare Red Friesian cattle are kept at Open Erf De Groote Modderkolk; the open barn is open daily. The site includes a tea house, a farm shop, a vegetable garden and an area with farm animals. The site is also a starting point for hiking and cycling routes.

Waterfalls and marked trails

The Loenense Waterfall is 15 metres high and is described as the highest waterfall in the Netherlands; there are also several smaller waterfalls along the stream. Castle, mill and local history

Kasteel Ter Horst was begun around 1557; Arnhem mayor Wijnand Hackfort (1522–1563) had it built as a summer and hunting residence. Guided tours are offered at the estate and in Kasteel Ter Horst throughout the year. During these tours, you can visit the grounds, gardens, castle, chapel and cellars. The construction date around 1557 and its use as a summer and hunting residence give Kasteel Ter Horst a clear place in the local history.

Harmanahof is a butterfly garden that you can reach via sandy paths behind the Reformed church in Loenen. The Loenense Molenbeek flows through Loenen and continues to power the paper machine at the Middelste Molen. The Loenense Beek flows right through the centre of Loenen. The Bekenroute starts and ends at the Middelste Molen on the Apeldoorns Kanaal. The paper machine at the Middelste Molen connects the watercourse with a craft tradition that still exists in the village today.

Heritage railway through the landscape

Loenen station is a stop on the VSM museum steam railway. The VSM Koninglijn runs between Apeldoorn and Dieren, stops in Loenen and passes through varied woodland and meadow landscapes between the Veluwe and the IJssel Valley.
